Hello All -

I''m not an experienced diamond purchaser. I''m looking to purchase an engagement ring in the next few weeks. I''m going to go with a basic 6 prong platinum setting (or something similar). Should I be worried about the yellow tint of an I diamond for an ideal/excellent cut, VS2, round 1.5ish carat diamond? I''ve read in some places that an I color will look great, but I have read in other places that one should get an H color or better for a platinum setting. Opinions?

Thanks!

Welcome!

A well cut reliably lab graded I colour of that size should look great in platinum, and not yellow - many happy I and J owners here with platinum settings. An I will still look white, you may detect a very slight hint of tint from the side at times, but the diamond will not be yellow. If you can, check out some reliably lab graded diamonds of the same cut quality and size, shape and I colour to be perfectly sure of your colour tolerances, but you may be pleasantly surprised how good an I can look.

I am on my way to get my first diamond and I looked at almost 10 B &M stores ranging with all sorts of certificates, carats and colors. I haven''t come across any H or I in a platinum setting that looked yellow to my eye.

My studs and e-ring are "I"s. I can see a light yellow tint but only in some lights at some angles. 90% of the time it looks bright white!

Thanks for the responses!!

I just got an I color round from GOG today and I cannot detect any color whatsoever, even face down on a white background, which is how they are graded. Maybe a little warmth, but definitely no yellow. It is icy white. I guess that means that I am not color sensitive, but this diamond is an "insane fireball" as Jonathan would say!
