I am trying to decide whether the h colored princess cut I just purchased is right for me. Today I was in the drugstore at the counter and my diamond looked gray with hints of yellow.

Other times it looks great, icy white! What can I expect from my h colored princess cut? It''s a vs2 clarity!!

It depends more on the cut than anything else. If it''s an ideal cut princess an H should be fine. A lesser cut will show color more. Also who graded it as an "H"? That matters a lot too because some grading places are stricter than others. Clarity has nothing to do with it...

It''s not an ideal cut and it''s graded by A.I.G. I just ordered the "full report" from the company to find out more about the stone.

Oh, and I traded a E colored princess I1 for it...that was peppered...all these little black spots were in the stone.

I don''t know enough about AIG to know if it''s reliable or not...if it *isn''t* reliable it''s possible you have an I or J stone. Also, the less well cut it is, the more color is likely to show. So those things will influence how yellow/gray your stone looks. The clarity won''t.

In addition to cut, lighting also makes a huge difference in the appearance of diamonds. Sometimes even a D colored stone can look yellow in certain lighting or dark.

I also find a PC will show color more than a round.

All I can say is, this diamond shopping is driving me crazy! I went down in color with my first stone so I could go up in clarity. (I was looking for an SI1 or SI2, but the jeweler only had this VS2.)
Now I''m wondering about the color. It looks great in most light.

So, would you pick a VS2 H stone (maybe I?) over an E I1 with black peppers?

HI Ava! (you have the cathedral seting in white gold right? We are almost twins, remember?

) I have a VS2 H Princess ina catherdral setting too (mine is yellow gold though). I haven''t noticed any color at all except if I''m some place where there is something reflecting into my stone. It looks very white to me. Mine is not an ideal cut, it is a GIA rated Very good/Excellent. We couldn''t spring for the WF ACA . Maybe the color you were seeing was just the lighting?? I can understand your frustration though. I think I would have made the same trade you did. If there were inclusions I could see it would drive me nuts. Have you had a chance to look at any other diamonds next to yours that are other colors, just for comparison? That might help. If you look at an E next to yours and can''t see a huge difference you might just assume it was the lighting making your stone look yellowish, but if there is a big difference you will see that as well and can go from there. If you find that you are seeing some warmth there that you aren''t crazy about, maybe you could find an SI1 that is truly eye clean and upgrade on the color a bit. There are always options. It''s a special ring (anniversary right?)and it is important you are happy with it. Especially if you wear it every day. I hope it all works out!

To be honest Ava, if its not an accurate H, then neither - you''re paying for the H colour and not getting the benefits of it..and I remember your concerns with the I1, so I wouldn''t go back there..

I agree with Teacher, you need to be happy with your purchase.

If I recall correctly, this was from a B&M store that you could only upgrade from them?
If you''re not content with this purchase, imo you should go back to the store and ask to see some more choices. I know its tempting to have our rings on our fingers *now*, but perhaps you could wait a lil until they can get a stone you''re really happy with?

To be honest, an H (if its graded accurately and a decent cut) shouldn''t show alot of grey and yellow. I haven''t heard of AIG either. Was your jeweler able to get in any GIA or AGS graded stones? I would insist on these to make the decision a bit easier, so at least you will know the colour and clarity is correct..

I hope you find something you love!
best wishes
AJ

I have an H/SI1 Jubilee and it shows no color. I personally would go down to a K color on a round brilliant cut, but not other cuts. Overhead lighting might be causing the coloration, or it could be the cut quality. I wore an I1 diamond for 14 years, and I will never wear one again! Also, I am not familiar with A.I.G. They might have very lax grading guidelines and the diamond might not really be an H in GIA or AGS terms. It is my understanding that princess cuts might show color in the corners.

Wow, my post sound totally jumbled. All over the place! I think I have seen your ring in other posts. It looks white to me.

Have you looked at GOG or Whiteflash to see what an ideal cut looks like? Can you return your diamond if you decide it is not right for you?

I would upgrade to an AGS0 princess cut stone, which is the best cut out there, make sure it's eyeclean (this could even drop you down to an SI2 with the right stone if need be), and call it a day. There are MANY of these stones out there, and any good jeweler should be able to get you one that matches that parameter. THEN you could safely get an H stone without worrying, and it would sparkle like CRAZY.

You guys are great! Thank you so much for your advice and support. I am currently waiting for the full AIG report on my diamond. Then, I will decide what my next step will be. I have about 60 days left on my return policy...so I am going to be thoughtful about this. I agree, it is nice to be rid of that peppered stone. TeacherK..Twin...below is a pic of my ring. (Yes I know it looks white in that great outside light! LOL!

LOL! Yes, it does look white! I love checking out my sparkles in the sunlight, so flattering. Also, our favorite Chinese restaurant has great lighting for my ring. I think we will have to go there more often

Have you had any more experiences of seeing color in your diamond? I''ll be following your story to see how it turns out, you know, since we are twins and all
