So I''ve been on the boards for about a month now absorbing TONS of information and let me first say that my diamond knowledge has increased ten-fold since reading everyone''s posts and all the tutorials! Sure glad I didn''t let the saleswoman at Jared''s force that diamond down my throat a month ago!

I''ve really started to narrow down some diamonds from JA and GOG and I came across these 2. One''s a H&A and the other is ideal and while I know most people advocate CUT! CUT! CUT! I want to know whether J color would be to far down the colour scale?

stats are as follows:

Ideal
.91 ct
H
VS1
depth 59.7%
table 57%
measurements 6.3 x 6.34 x 3.77
crown 33 degrees
pavilion 40.6 degrees
girdle M-STK
gia cert

H&A
1.09 ct
J
Si1
depth 62%
table 55%
measurements 6.56 x 6.60 x 4.08
crown 35 degrees
pavilion 40.6 degrees
girdle M-STk
gia cert

I''m pretty sure I can guess you guys will say "the H&A dummy!" but I''m just having a hard time wrapping my head around J-colour reguardless of the cut and whether it''s going to show up on white gold or platinum.

What makes you think the first stone is a bad choice? Do you have pictures? It is certainly worth a look, it gets below a 2 on the HCA meaning it is probably a very beautiful stone...

Also is your GF (or you if you are the GF!) a size girl? Because the J is a nice chunk bigger too...

Purely from the numbers I prefer the second one. Do you have IS images for these? Or links to the sites? If the second one is a H&A from GOG, then I would say that one definately.

And the J colour is still going to face up very white, many PSers have J colour stones and are still very happy. If it is a GOG stone, it will have a lifetime upgrade on it, so you can upgrade to another colour if you want down the track.

And also, the second stone is quite a bit larger, noticably so IMO so that''s another reason

the first stone falls into the older person''s ring stone region, which means from far it will look great but under close observation you head might cause a lot of shadow to fall onto the stone resulting in a darker stone, so not recommended for younger generations and short-sighted people.

stone 2, do you have a hearts image to back it up as a H&A? Looks great from the numbers so I would check the IS/ASET pic. I do not think J would significantly color the stone. Here is GOG''s color demonstration. See if you can tell the difference, if so, then you will probably need to go higher up in color grade.

I''ve heard about other J color H&A stones facing up very white. But the reason I personally chose a stone of H color was b/c I didn''t like that I could see hints of yellow from the SIDE in stones colored I or lower. So if the side-viewing color is an issue at all, be sure to consider that. Sometimes that''s completely hidden by the setting anyway.

Oh I don''t think the first is at all that bad. It''s just a little on the "small" side. Then again, is there really a big difference between a stone that is .243 and .258 inch diameter? Doubt you could actually tell. Both of them are from JA and have photos and gia certs to check out. The second also includes the idealscope photo but not an aset. I don''t suppose JA can provide this? I really like the stones that GOG carries but budget-wise I''m afraid all I''d be able to afford was about sub-.95 stones and I just to find the right combination between size and cut for my so.

In a round stone idealscope tells you most of the same info as an ASET. I would also get an IS for stone #1 if you are still considering it, but really, a J colored stone can be absolutely beautiful if you don''t mind a bit of creaminess from the side.
