Agree. The change makes zero difference in anyone's daily life. I see it as a way for one to show your blind allegiance to an authority. The real danger is in what google will get from the US taxpayer in response.

You stated this perfectly @RMOO. Google wants free rein and the government to leave them alone. What better way to begin to make that reality than to show blind allegiance to the person in authority. The changing of the Gulf of Mexico name was purely ego driven. It helped no one and Google made the choice to go along with it.

There is a reason the room was packed with billionaires on January 20th. It will end up costing us all.

I think Google is caught in the middle and it does have this issue with other bodies of water. It will be interesting to see which name they put in the parentheses. I don't think the people in the U.S. will see both names, but some of the PSers in other countries should.

I understand your point in that it is the usual way of displaying names. It is just more suspect because the reasoning behind the change is more (IMO) racially/culturally motivated than anything else. I mean, is there anyone else that cared what the Gulf of Mexico was called before now?

No, no one seemed to care. But I just trying to point out that these cultural/political name differences do occur in other parts of the world. I'm not saying that I think it should happen, just that it does.

I got you. I didn't think you were arguing for the change, just stating that it is not unusual for there to be two names for a geographic landmark when the bordering countries disagree.

The reasoning of the people who implemented this change - probably. But I'm willing to bet all my jewellery that Google doesn't give a flying... ladybug about any of these issues. It's a corporation. The only thing it cares about is profit, and anything and everything is only a tool for achieving it.

Nautical charts and maps are standardised by the International Hydrographic Organization which, being international, doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of any one country's government. Which means they aren't obligated to comply with Trump's executive order in the slightest. Which means the entire rest of the world will keep calling the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of Mexico".

As a result, a sort of a dispute arises (although it's not entirely a dispute... but it is some form of contesting the established nomenclature). And as with any other dispute, Google prefers to stay out of it and just edits the maps to appease everyone. Which means in the US it will change the name to appease the US government. Which leads us to...

It will be interesting to see which name they put in the parentheses.

Probably "Gulf of America". I'm 99,99% convinced, based on how they've done things before. The universally recognised name remains, the disputed name is added in parentheses.

Sorry for the confusion, yes, it was this administration who I was referring to here. I agree google is just doing what it will do as a corporation. I did not mean to insinuate that google has the bias.

I assume the same thing. And who knows what will happen when there is a change in administrations. The whole Gulf of America thing may go away. I think the whole thing is silly. Are they expecting every Geography textbook, globe and map in the U.S. to be thrown away and replaced for this one thing? Pretty unlikely. So then what? Kids in school will see "Gulf of Mexico" but be told it's really the "Gulf of America"? How does that work?????

I don't know where to put this. So much is happening at once.
Some other actions/information of note for those interested.
I suggest you look up all of this for specifics. It is important. Easily missed with everything else happening.

EM locked out OPM(Office of Personnel Management) officials and he and his aides have gained access to all federal worker private information through EHRI, they also conducted searches of personal items in offices. OPM officials can't see what they are doing in those databases.
They are sleeping in the OPM offices.

EM now also has taken over direct access to the US Treasury payment systems.
National Security has been compromised. He has control of America's money.

EM also has taken over to General Service Administration Tech- they can potentially access all information on worker's laptops remotely/read email etc.

EM is not an elected official of any kind. He has no security clearance.
Most DJT appointees have no security clearances of any kind.
EM has no idea what running a gov't entails and is behaving like this is a tech company takeover. Of America.
There is no oversight into what they're doing.

is now in process purging all senior gov't officials who have ever investigated him from FBI, US Attorney's Office, Inspector Generals etc.

Trade war begins tomorrow:
25%Tariff on Mexico and Canada 10% on China starting tomorrow.
All countries have already expressed retaliatory responses forthcoming.

DJT media gave gifts of shares to FBI director pick Patel, McMahon in clear conflict of interest.

The addition of removal of the The National Labor Relations Board.

It's ironic how everyone feels like they are in the Twilight Zone because that's how I have felt for the past 16 months. Welcome to the club

@ItsMainelyYou, I read your post after midnight. I’m so sad.

Thread jack - @bee24, Your avatar ring is gorgeous.
Thank you!

Count your blessings ... I feel like I'm DYING in this Twilight Zone.
Certainly people will die both here and abroad as the result of everything that has happened and will happen.

Not sure where to put this but you can no longer access passport applications online. It says that the system is undergoing maintenance. We’re trapped…hahahaa (crying)

@bee24, My first thought was maybe it was down due to updates being made due to Visas now being required to enter some counties when a passport was all that was needed in the past.

I just googled “Government websites down”. What came up shot my thought above to hell. I suggest you google it. It appears the current administration has taken down over 8,000 government websites since Friday afternoon. This was reported by The New York Times so I’m assuming it’s accurate.

Yes! Thank you, I’ve been tracking it but didn’t realize it was 8,000 sites now. Horrific. Changing content, deleting vital information, and now taking down websites. Obviously, a lot more going on also.

I noticed that last night. Scary times.

@Calliecake From where I’m standing, you’re all just discussing the latest national emergency. :(2

I don't think so as you haven't mentioned people by name or political parties, but I'm just guessing here.

Thank you for replying so quickly @Avondale and @Lookinagain.

If anyone thinks I’ve crossed a line in what I write, please say so and I will immediately take whatever I’ve said down.

Agreed, sorry if I took things too far. I definitely don’t want to get banned!! I thought I read we could talk about current events but I don’t want to cross lines.

No one is crossing any lines as I interpret the new loosened regs. You’re just fine @Calliecake <3

Thank you @Bonfire.

I wish @Smitcompton had not left. I hope if she occasionally skims PS that she will come back.

This is apparently why the websites are down.
orders require elimination of federal DEI programs and require the government to recognize two sexes: male and female. Guidance issued in a January 29 memo from the US Office of Personnel Management directed agency heads to remove “all outward facing media (websites, social media accounts, etc.) that inculcate or promote gender ideology” by 5 p.m. Friday.

We have arrived in the future.

(I’m assuming since I’m seeing this change, it’s probably a fact in the US, too.)
