@MissGotRocks, I posted the above post only to once again see you posted basically the same thing in a quarter of the words and said it a millions times better. I hope you know how much you are loved here! Please don’t ever change. You have been a bright spot for years here.

I feel the same way @Lookinagain. There are threads I know are going to bother me just glancing at the title. I just don’t respond to them.

Threadjack to @Lookinagain

I wanted to respond to you the other day and can’t remember what thread it was in. It was regarding how things bother you and keep you awake at night that you don’t have control of. I’ve noticed the older I get this seems to happen a lot to me too. You aren’t alone.

I agree with you. If there's something I don't agree with, and it's not about liking a piece of jewelry generally, then I just keep my mouth shut. The other thing I do is skip threads in Hangout if I don't like the title for one reason or another. It's pretty easy for me to do both.

Totally agree - if it doesn’t speak to me or move me, I just continue on my merry way. I even see things I disagree with, but it has to be pretty important for me to get involved in a verbal disagreement. Life is too short and we should all be responsible adults.

The funding freeze has been rescinded. Whew! I don't think anyone associated with the decision understood the scope of consequences that would have occurred.

I'm on board with making government less wasteful and more efficient. The way to do that is to hire outside consultants to work with each department to analyze operations and identify things that should and can be changed. Throwing out the baby with the bathwater is not a good plan.

Thanks for posting this @Matata. Wonderful news!

You are a dear heart - thank you for your kind words. Like minds think alike! You are one of the most logical, caring souls I have the pleasure of interacting with on an ongoing basis. Thank you for your friendship!

This is the most terrifying prospect. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy year.

I'm not sure it was totally rescinded. I'm listening to the news and it seems to be only for certain things. What I do know is that this whole thing is confusing and chaotic.
I just found this

The White House confirmed that OMB pulled the memo Wednesday in a two sentence notice sent to agencies and departments, but said that the underlying executive orders targeting federal spending in areas like diversity, equity and inclusion and climate change, remained in place.

I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of what’s happening today is designed to spark outrage and distract us from the real problem. If we are busy fighting each other, then we won’t turn on the oligarchs robbing us blind.

IMG_4831.jpeg

yes, i have thought this for a long time and im not picking on one side or the other

they do something big and rash and newsworthy but something that wont actually effect our day to day lives while politicans then sneak in their real agenda while we are distracted
personally i will be still calling it the Gulf of Mexico

I came upon a meme today that gave me pause:

“It depresses the hell out of me that I people I grew up with or I am related to have turned into people I wouldn’t tell where Anne Frank was hiding”.

to those people it is worth repeating he who snitches to you will snitch on you

So to be clear - Google maps has decided to rename the Gulf of Mexico based on one American’s desire? Am I missing more context than this?

thought id better acquaint myself with the actual geography

@Daisys and Diamonds, As far as I know it was never an election issue for either side. I don’t recall it ever being mentioned. (I hope saying that isn’t breaking any rules.) If it is, just tell me to remove this. No need to tell Ella. I will remove it.

When Kenny started this thread, I seriously thought it was a joke. Two or three weeks ago when California was burning down Mexico sent people to help us put the fires out. So did Canada.

If one person wanted to change the name of our country, could that happen?

That’s my understanding. Who know’s, It’s very possible I could have missed something.

In a word, no. That's not how it works, no matter how many Sharpies you have.

Not legally anyway. However, if you call it something for a protracted period of time, it can stick in people’s minds. It will never in mine though!!

the street we lived in when i was a kid was called N street but the residents called it Corronation st (after the British soap) after a while it became its official name
many years ebfore in my dad's home town there was a street called after our family, it too dissapaired and changed its name
both very small streets of a rural nature

None of this is normal.
Everything that is happening is illegal.
The one thing Americans should be saying as a mantra:
Do not comply in advance.
To any of it.
The breadth of cruelty and incompetence has never been seen before.

They are once again setting up the conditions that brought about the Gilded Age and the terrible aftermath that almost destroyed the nation. I suggest anyone not familiar should read up on it.
A classic:
Progress and Poverty Vol I and II, Henry George

It’s within the federal government’s purview to change what landmarks are called within the Geographic Names Information System, but that’s an internal database that only impacts titles within the United States. The Office of the Secretary of the Interior does have the authority to change the names of American landmarks—but it can't change the names of things outside of the country.

Will Other Countries Call It The Gulf Of America?

Other nations don't have to go along with the switch.

Thanks for this update!

No.

Context:
It's not just "one American".
I am one American, but Google wouldn't do this for me.

That one American is the US president, a very powerful post.
Good bad right or wrong, like it or not, he got more votes, popular and electoral college, so he has the job.

IOW, instead Google doing what of "one American" wants it is, arguably, what tens of millions of voting Americans want.

Again, I'm not taking sides.
Just the facts, ma'am.

@ItsMainelyYou I agree and I extremely dislike what you said, but I love that you said it, if that makes sense. (I didn't know what emoji to choose. :roll2:)

I completely understand, I feel this way quite a lot lately. Just sickened by it.

I was vague in my descriptor but find it fascinating that Google maps would make this change based on his talking point. You get what you chose, but this speaks more to ego than electors in my opinion. Wild times!

Agree. The change makes zero difference in anyone's daily life. I see it as a way for one to show your blind allegiance to an authority. The real danger is in what google will get from the US taxpayer in response.
