For those of you who remember, wayyyyy back in March I started a thread, Itching for a Meow Meow asking for advice on owning a cat. Well six months later, DH and I finally made the jump! DH was really hesitant until we had to cat sit his brother''s cat for two weeks and he finally realized that we can do this!

We had a very enlightening adoption experience...

On Saturday, we went to two very well known "No-Kill" shelters and almost adopted a kitten from there, however, DH and I talked and we really wanted an older cat so that her kitten years are behind her and is a little more mellow. So we decided to visit a local city shelter and wow we were surprised! The two No Kill shelters were like The Hyatt and the "Kill" shelter is like Motel 6. I spoke with the shelter volunteer who was very nice. He explained that the No Kill shelters come around once every few weeks to pick up the cats/dogs that they deem "more adoptable" leaving these city shelters with the "leftovers". He said unlike the two No Kill shelters we went to, they take in all cats/dogs from the city and because they are limited in space the cats/dogs normally do not make it past three weeks.

He also explained that people mostly adopt kittens or cats that are playful in their cage therefore many of the mellow ones get put to sleep. We explained that we are looking for a mellow 3-5 year old cat and he introduced us to Lynn-Marie (now renamed Pebbles). She was super quiet but she allowed both of us to handle her without clawing/scratching/meowing. When I checked her collar, she was a stray brought in on 09/08/09 and the volunteer said that she probably will not make it till next week. She also recently had a litter of kittens (at the shelter) but is now spayed. DH decided she is the one and we took her home that night!

Apparently there is a lot of debate on whether to adopt from Kill or No Kill shelters. Either way, we feel really good about adopting from the local city shelter because the conditions were just too sad...

We took her to the vet on Tuesday and the vet said that she is in pretty good shape despite going through so much! (whew, a sigh of relief!) Her teeth are in great condition and the vet believes she is actually 2 and not 3 so without knowing it we got one more year out of Pebbles :) She has a cold, so she is on antibiotics and because she recently gave birth her hormones are still a little out of wack, but she will probably get a little more active once it gets back to normal. Either way she is such a well behaved kitty and we love her! Our building knows about her so it apparently wasn''t a problem at all to have small, quiet pets.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I wanted to share this experience with my PS family :) Thanks for offering your advice back in March!!

Attached are two cell phone pictures I took of her lounging in her new home... isn''t she adorable....??

I applaud that you did your research too - no kill do sound better in theory but the reality is not so kind (though there are exceptions).

Congrats on adopting pebbles, im sure she''ll be a great companion for many years to come

You did such a wonderful thing by rescuing her and giving her the chance to know how it feels to be safe and happy and loved.

Congratulations!! May she bring you both health and happiness.

Pebbles looks like a real sweetie, and I know she is going to be very appreciative of her new home! Congrats to you for doing such a wonderful thing, I know you will have many happy years together!

She''s beautiful!
Thank you so much for rescuing her, I bet she is going to make a wonderful lap kitty.

Oh, she looks so sweet...they really are pretty easy to take care of (atleast the ones I''ve had). With our current
kitty I had the same issues as you. I wanted an older cat (well 2- 4). She is a good kitty but not much of a people
kitty. I am currently looking for kitty number 2 and I''m hoping for one that will actually like more interaction with
humans. Congrats on your new kitty!

sukiisukii, I do remember your original post. Oh, I am so happy that you went and got her!! Thank you so much for coming back and telling us about her!! I''ll confess -- your adoption story made me tear up a little too. And, Pebbles looks right at home!! Yay!!!

Congrats on your new addition! What a wonderful thing to rescue a beautiful helpless kitty that otherwise would have likely been euthanized! She''s a doll! Can''t wait to see more pictures!!

What a pretty girl! Her colors are so soft and pretty too! Congratulations on becoming a kitty owner!!!

Thanks Everyone! I am really happy and overjoyed with our decision and truly she is a doll. When we first brought her home, she hid under the TV unit and we didn't want to force her out therefore we put a line of little treats to lure her out and when she was ready (about 30 minutes later) she started following the trail of food and came out and DH started petting her and she loved it. Pebbles warmed up to us fairly quickly, she is super affectionate and loves to give loving head butts. When I am on the couch she comes up to me and just lays next to me or sometimes climbs on my lap to just relax. Even though she loves affection, she is still very independent, she doesn't scratch the bedroom door to wake us up to feed her. Her personality is exactly what DH and I are looking for, we are grateful to have found her. Though she isn't the prettiest cat on the block, she has the perfect personality to us which is so much more important.

Can't wait to get home to see her! :)

PS = For those of you who followed the March thread, DH isn't allergic. Yay!!

SOO CUTE!

Awww--she is so adorable! Thank you for rescuing her. I love to hear about kitty rescues, because as much as I love cats, I am very allergic and therefore unable to rescue one myself. Pet her for me, please!

Yay for adopting a stray kitty!!!! She''s beautiful.

Ditto to this - i got a little weepy when i read that she wouldn''t make it through the next week. It''s such a sad story, but with a very happy ending for her and for you. She''s adoreable. Please post more photos when you can!

What a great story! She''s beautiful and looking pretty stoked to have a new home with you. You''ve also aced the first rule of cat parenting: pick a kitty that matches your couch!

KITTY!!!

*head bonks* from my shelter kitties to yours! You did a great thing, and I''m thrilled you got a cat that matches your family''s lifestyle. My Lola sounds a lot like your Pebbles. Enjoy your lap kitty, and give her plenty of loving snuggles for me!
