For those of you who remember, wayyyyy back in March I started a thread, Itching for a Meow Meow asking for advice on owning a cat. Well six months later, DH and I finally made the jump! DH was really hesitant until we had to cat sit his brother''s cat for two weeks and he finally realized that we can do this!
We had a very enlightening adoption experience...
On Saturday, we went to two very well known "No-Kill" shelters and almost adopted a kitten from there, however, DH and I talked and we really wanted an older cat so that her kitten years are behind her and is a little more mellow. So we decided to visit a local city shelter and wow we were surprised! The two No Kill shelters were like The Hyatt and the "Kill" shelter is like Motel 6. I spoke with the shelter volunteer who was very nice. He explained that the No Kill shelters come around once every few weeks to pick up the cats/dogs that they deem "more adoptable" leaving these city shelters with the "leftovers". He said unlike the two No Kill shelters we went to, they take in all cats/dogs from the city and because they are limited in space the cats/dogs normally do not make it past three weeks.
He also explained that people mostly adopt kittens or cats that are playful in their cage therefore many of the mellow ones get put to sleep. We explained that we are looking for a mellow 3-5 year old cat and he introduced us to Lynn-Marie (now renamed Pebbles). She was super quiet but she allowed both of us to handle her without clawing/scratching/meowing. When I checked her collar, she was a stray brought in on 09/08/09 and the volunteer said that she probably will not make it till next week. She also recently had a litter of kittens (at the shelter) but is now spayed. DH decided she is the one and we took her home that night!
Apparently there is a lot of debate on whether to adopt from Kill or No Kill shelters. Either way, we feel really good about adopting from the local city shelter because the conditions were just too sad...
We took her to the vet on Tuesday and the vet said that she is in pretty good shape despite going through so much! (whew, a sigh of relief!) Her teeth are in great condition and the vet believes she is actually 2 and not 3 so without knowing it we got one more year out of Pebbles
She has a cold, so she is on antibiotics and because she recently gave birth her hormones are still a little out of wack, but she will probably get a little more active once it gets back to normal. Either way she is such a well behaved kitty and we love her! Our building knows about her so it apparently wasn''t a problem at all to have small, quiet pets.
Sorry for the lengthy post but I wanted to share this experience with my PS family
Thanks for offering your advice back in March!!
Attached are two cell phone pictures I took of her lounging in her new home... isn''t she adorable....??
