Let''s guess the puppy that the Obama family will take to the White House. We''ll know who is the winner in a few months
9.gif

Here is some history of previous dogs;

George W. Bush
Miss Beazley, Scottish Terrier
Spot, dog
Barney, Scottish Terrier
Bill Clinton
Buddy, Chocolate Labrador Retriever

George Bush
Millie, Springer Spaniel and Ranger, one of Millie''s puppies

Ronald Reagan
Lucky, Bouvier des Flandres
Rex, King Charles Cavalier Spaniel

Jimmy Carter
Grits, dog

Gerald Ford
Liberty, Golden Retriever who had a litter of pups while at the White House

Richard Nixon
Vicky, Poodle
Pasha, Terrier
King Timahoe, Irish Setter

Lyndon B. Johnson
Beagle and Little Beagle
Him and Her, also beagles
Blanco, a white Collie
Yuki, dog.
John F. Kennedy
Charlie, Welsh terrier
Pushinka, Shannon, Wolf, and Clipper– dogs
Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie and Streaker– Pushinka and Charlie''s pups

Dwight D. Eisenhower
Heidi, Weimaraner dog

I''m going to guess a Bichon Frise

I guess/suggest a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Such regal and elegant dogs. They are intelligent, loyal, slightly aloof. Sounds like Obama. And they are from Zimbabwe! African Lion-hunting dogs. They should get a Ridgeback from Ridgeback Rescue!

I bet those little girls want a tiny dog ... like a Maltese or a Toy Poodle or a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian. But it would look *elitist* to get those types of dogs

. So here''s my guess: Border Collie. The most intelligent dog. All-American Lassie foxy appeal.

I''m hoping they go to the Humane Society or another type of animal shelter to adopt a mixed breed.

I''d recommend a golden retriever although I''m the first to admit that I''m totally 100% biased!

You can get adoptable pets from breed-specific rescue groups. But I agree ... that would be nice message. Mutts are hearty & adorable too.

My DH and I are both thinking golden retriever.

I hope they get a mutt from a shelter too.

I want one!!!!!!

a boxer?

Seriously, it''s the responsible thing to do, and sets a lovely example.

Look at the cuties! I hope they rescue one of these lovies!

I agree that they should absolutely rescue a dog, but I personally love my breed because of their characteristic personality. For example, Jack Russels are typically hyper, and Weimeraners are high energy. I think knowing a breed can help people get a dog that fits their lifestyle, which leads to fewer dogs being abandoned. :) But I am biased. SO loves his family mutt, and it is an amazing dog... much better behaved than mine!

Me too, I am such a fan of Golden''s and Labs!

I immediately thought golden retriever also! Fun thread!

I was thinking about this last night. Wouldn''t it be goofy if they chose a pug? First pug.

I think it''ll be a Labrador Retriever.

Yes, hope they go that route.

I''m thinking either a lab or a golden retriever.

But I really really want them to rescue a dog. Maybe a boxer.

A Russian Wolfhound so they can see it from their backyard.

I want to echo that I really REALLY hope that they go to a shelter and just pick out a cute mutt. It''s the most responsible thing to do.

There are plenty of non-mutts that need rescuing too! But I agree, I hope they rescue regardless of whether it''s a mutt or a purebred.

I completely agree that I hope they rescue a dog. A greyhound would be nice; however, I would guess a beagle would be a more likely choice. And, there is never a shortage of beagles at shelters, sadly.

I think they definitely should adopt a rescue/shelter dog, and it should be a black lab mix, a pit bull mix, or a Great Dane. Oh, and I''m not biased AT ALL . . . I promise!

I really hope he goes to a shelter or rescue--it would do SO MUCH good for the animals and send such a strong message. I have only had dogs from rescue/shelters and they have all been amazing and fabulous beyond words.

His good friend and sponsor Oprah vowed to only go to shelters/rescues after she learned (and exposed on her show) the horrors of the puppy mill industry and the plight of homeless and abandoned animals. Perhaps she can influence him. This is a simple, fast and no-cost thing he can do and use his new power to set an example for animal welfare without touching one piece of legislation or spending one dime.

I work in rescue and animal rights every day. I believe that if people really opened their eyes to the suffering of animals, especially dogs who want NOTHING more than to be loved by a human, no one would ever again get a dog from anywhere but shelter/rescue.

Definitely. My bad. Sorry about that. ANY rescued animal, would be great. I just tend to prefer weirdo Franken-mutts myself. And Franken-Cats. There''s something appealing about the uniqueness of their appearances.

One of his daughters is allergic so they need a "hypo-allergenic" dog if that is the correct term. I''m not sure what the distinction is, my labradoodle (see avatar for Carmella) was a shelter dog. We picked her because of her goofy facial expression and impossibly long legs and then wondered what mom and dad were...she is not telling so it is still a matter of speculation, but people with allergies to dogs have no problems with her. Now if I could just give her better haircuts!

nytimes article on the pet adoption saga of the Obamas thus far: link

By now, the Obamas should know that everything they do, including picking a family pet, will be interpreted through a political prism.

Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, have been talking about a dog for a while.

He had said a year ago, while campaigning in Iowa, that his older daughter, Malia, now 10, had been investigating breeds and decided that because of her allergies, she wanted a goldendoodle, which is a cross between a golden retriever and poodle.

He said his daughter thought the goldendoodle “the optimal dog.”

This prompted lobbying by dog lovers and animal groups against a purebred. The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote to the Obamas saying that a purebred would be “elitist.” The Best Friends Animal Society gathered more than 50,000 signatures to persuade them to adopt a dog instead of going to a breeder.

On Sept. 30, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Obamas gave a few more details.

“We’re going to adopt a dog, I think,” said Mrs. Obama.

Mr. Obama then put in: “A rescue dog.”

The news sped around the dog portion of the blogosphere. Many readers were thrilled, seeing this as a sign that the Obamas were taking a populist approach. Many also assumed that the Obamas were getting a dog from a shelter, although they did not exactly say that.

One commenter on Digg Dialogg, for example, wrote that the Obamas planned to “adopt a rescue dog, instead of purchasing a puppy from a pet store or breeder.” The writer added: “The Obama family’s decision to adopt will help publicize the plight of rescue animals and could result in many pets being saved from euthanasia across the country.”

I thought I had seen that somewhere that they needed hypoallergenic! I have a goldendoodle actually that we got through a rescue. Great dog. Sadly because they are "in fashion" right now there are many sitting in shelters waiting to be adopted.

I think he will NOT get a pedigreed dog. I feel he might go to a shelter and or rescue a pedigreed dog from a rescue organization. He might view it as elitist on one hand to get a pure bred puppy. Rescue, sure, mongrel, sure. That is just my view.

PS: I did NOT read any of the answers to this prior to my post.
