I have posted before about having to change out my tanzanite, in my tanzanite and alexandrite engagement ring. Right now I''m considering either a colorless diamond, or a green diamond. I know typically fancy diamonds are more expensive, but when I go to different websites, green diamonds seem to be cheaper. I''m looking for a lighter green/green yellow or green gray stone. Should be between 6.5 mm RB - 7mm RB. Should I trust a green diamond around the size requested under 3 Grand? What type of color enhancement should be avoided? Any dealers you find that are trustworthy for color diamonds? Anyone have a green diamond engagement ring and care to share?

Thanks for you help.

I think you''re talking about chameleon (spelling) diamonds. They change color and there''s usually a bit of yellow and brown in them. Personally, I don''t like the color and would stick to a white diamond.

True greens cost more than blues from what I know (could be wrong) and you''d never find one in the size you''re looking for. If you did, we''re talking millions.

The green diamonds are probably color treated, irradiated or HPHT. From what I know the color treatment is stable. It should be easy to find those colors but make sure the dealer discloses the treatment.

Make sure it is graded by GIA.

Also, posting this in color stones should get you more responses.

HI Mara,
pure green is among the rarest ( and most expensive) colors in diamonds.
However, green, brown and yellow are closely related- so many of the brownish stones may have some greenish undertones.....and also be quite inexpensive.

The stone in the photo was graded Fancy Light Greenish Yellow by GIA. This is the type of grade which should cost about the same as a less costly colorless- maybe like a J color.

Although there are many treated stones out there, personally, I prefer natural ones.
If you want to be sure it''s natural, I agree that it''s smart to look for stones with a GIA report- GIA will not issue a report on a stone which was treated for color.

Thanks everyone for your help. I seems that going with a white diamond may be the best route. It also sounds like it may be hard to find a colored diamond and see it in person. I would not want to invest in a colored stone without getting to look at it before purchase. I do live near the LA jewelry district, so I''m assuming if I spend a day there, I might be able to find one.
