Blackberry. Having seen DD and DS using theirs, I''m curious; however, I wonder which model I should start with.

I don''t own a cell phone so that feature would be good as then I could text the granddaughters....

Any suggestions are most welcome.

Hi Isabel!

I have the BB Storm and its ok but I don''t find it all that easy to use but then again I am not good at operating these tiny keyboards, I have heard the Curve is more user friendly compared to the Storm, maybe some PSers that have tried both might chime in to help you!

Try one out at the store. The BB has tiny keys and you need decent vision to find the right letter. I am not a granny yet but I love the idea of texting kids. They love it and you''ll get some good communication out of them.

too old to learn, plus i would need to get a new phone.

I don''t have a blackberry so I can''t recommend one, but I do recommend looking at ones with bigger keys. Whenever it''s time to look for a new cell phone, I make sure to focus only on ones with bigger keys. That may not be an issue for you, but it might be something to think about. Also, obviously you''ll want something vey user-friendly.

Happy shopping!

I had the storm and I hated it. I''ve got the "Tour" now and the interface is better. It''s a work phone, so I don''t exactly get to pick what I want. But if I was going to pick a BB, I''d go with the "Bold". DH has one and I like it better. The interface is basically that same as the "Tour" but instead of the rolly ball thing to navigate, it has a touch pad. The touch pad is far better IMO. I am forever getting gunk under my rolly ball and it getting where it won''t go in certain directions.

I would not recommend the touch screen BB. My SIL has one and I find it impossible to navigate. I''m always touching the wrong thing.

You should go into the store and play with them and see which one suits you best. And yes, the keys are rather small, but you get used to it.

Never too old to learn. My parents are avid texters at 77 and 75! They even use smileys!!!

Get an iphone. As a fellow technophobe I can say they are idiot proof.

From a big technology challenged idiot, that is praise indeed!

Well, since DF knows every statistic about anything PS,

I should follow his lead and buy nothing?? I may be a granny, but I''m not senile....yet.

I fought every attempt to learn anything about the computer, but since DH bought one a few years back I had nothing to lose by trying it. I admit to the guilty pleasure of being somewhat ''addicted'' (hubby''s term, not mine) now.

As several kind PS''ers noted, my best bet is to go to a store and look at them. Yes, those darn keys are small, but if DD can use her ''Bold'' with her artificial nails, so can I (You guessed it - another guilty bow to fashion).

I am in my mid 50''s, and I love my Blackberry.
I''ve had the Curve about 3 years. I need to upgrade to the Bold this summer when I have time to go into the store.

I think also it depends on where you live. I am on a small island, and the only service that doesn''t drop calls here is Verizon. That means the iphone is not an option.

I have a BB Curve. The keyboard is okay for me. (I''ve had to set the text size a bit larger to see however.

) I pretty much only use mine for texting my immediate family. We do Blackberry Messenger since we all have Blackberries. Easy to use, although to be honest I always hand my phone to one of my daughter''s to program when I need anything changed. It''s very convenient to use for writing shopping lists and appts./alarms too.

and will look smaller every yr.

I have the BB 8330 and like having the full qwerty keyboard - makes it so much easier to type a text message.

I love my Blackberry Curve! DH had his Blackberry for years before I caved and let him get one for me. (It ended up costing us less than my regular phone, strange, I know.)

I thought the buttons would be too small, but I got used to it very quickly.

I tried the Blackberry Pearl for a week and hated it. I do like my Curve, though! Go try one out, I bet you''ll love it!

My grandmother was much older than you, Isabel, and she was IMing me on her Mac *years* ago. (Yeah, she started each IM with "Dear Lori" and finished each with "Love, Helga" but close enough, right?) Grannies with technology rock!

My MIL just got a BB to text her 25 year old daughter - so not weird at all

I have Sprint, so DH and I have the BB Tour - I love it. I think the closest model that the other carriers have is the Bold. I carry a BB Curve for work and it''s fine, but I prefer my Tour to the Curve. I like the weight and clarity of the graphics, camera, and a few minor software differences where the Tour is better.

my husband has the Blackberry curve and really likes it :)

isaku,

I know you said you were looking for a blackberry, but if you''re only looking to text, there are an array of full QWERTY keyboards on cell phones that have larger keys than BBs. I have the Samsung Alias 2 and the keys are actually fairly large. Also, the LG nV3 has a full QWERTY.

If you''re interested in internet access, etc, then a BB might be the way to go...but if you just want to text the grandkids, a cell phone might be the better way to go.

Just a thought!
