"...Christie''s Geneva too has now sold a rare red diamond at auction for $2.7 million (or $1,180,340 per carat.) The three auctions had a bidder in common: Laurence Graff."

"...and later that day in Geneva, Laurence purchased a Fancy Vivid Blue pear-shaped diamond weighing 4.16 carats for $4,727,986 at Sotheby''s..."

Because they somehow figured out it's always been my secret plan to marry a Sultan and they want to make sure they have a good inventory for us to choose from when we go shopping?

There was an interesting article about him in the August Forbes. They call him "the new Harry Winston," which if you''re familiar with Winston''s exploits, is saying something (recall that he''s the one who gave the Hope diamond to the Smithsonian, among other things).

I''ve heard a lot of people referred to as "the king of bling," but Graff has earned the title.

DeeJay, bwah!

DG, does the Letseng diamond come from Botswana or South Africa? I ask because the name "Letseng" sounds like it''s Setswana, one of the main languages...

Neither--the mine is in Lesotho. It's an extremely odd mine in that the grade (carats recovered per ton of ore) is very low, but the diamonds it produces are huge, coming in sizes far out of the normal range compared to other pipe mines. Even more oddly, it was sold a few years ago. No doubt the former owners have been kicking themselves.

It is a small independant kingdom I believe Capt.
Our aussie shamed entrepenuer, Alan Bond, is part of the mining company which i believe is part owned by the King.
Alan Bond took the America''s Cup from you guys about 20 years ago, remeber "I come form a land downunder, where women glow and men plunder". Approriate Capt, for you and Alan

I hope we might one day see the rough diamond planning that is applied to the cutting of this one and the earlier big rock the Graff / Hope of Africa group bought. Especially this one becuase I beleive it is a little more included which will make for better 3D chess

Yes, the Capt recalls that dark day quite vividly, not in the least because it was the end of the America''s Cup as we knew it, less so because someone else finally won (that was bound to happen eventually, NYYC or no NYYC) but because it ushered in an era of corporate sponsorship that turned a once-proud event into something akin to NASCAR (or Formula 1, if you prefer).

You''ll recall also that Alan Bond was the one who bought Van Gogh''s Irises but had to return it when the check bounced.

I could not find photos of the blues, but the red ring is here.

Capt., it''s basically the same dialect...Sesotho and Setswana are both considered Bantu languages and very similar (and both are spoken to some extent, in portions of South Africa because tribal pockets of both people are found spread out far and wide across the Southern African region. Thanks for filling me in though.

Definetly more NASCAR than F1

i think it was not that the chq bounced, it was that he wrote the chq from other peoples chq books and they did not like it when they found out

He is the most successful tradesman in the world, he was a house painter or signwritter or some such thing

The CEO of Graff Holdings, Henri Barguirdjian, was on CNBC a few days ago. He says that alot of their business is coming from Russia, the Far East and

the "Stans." He said their average sale is 400k.
