Hey everyone,

I just went to the jeweler because the setting I had made came in...it looks beautiful! It''s designed to look like the cartier declaration ring, with baguettes on each side of the ring. Now its time to pick a stone and I agonized over two that I saw today. As usual, I''d love to get your advice :)

I''ve attached the GIA reports of both below:

1.21 carats ($6,900) - http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.showReportVerification&reportno=2101600089&weight=1.21

1.33 carats ($8,800) - http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.showReportVerification&reportno=2111123111&weight=1.33

the jeweler had an idealscope but in my haste, I only looked at the second stone through the tool. It is laser inscribed with the GIA number (which is nice when it gets cleaned, insurance purposes, etc) and it is also laser inscribed as a "H&A". I know that you can laser inscribe anything on a diamond these days for a minimal fee so the existence of the hearts and arrows inscription doesn''t mean that it actually is one. However, upon looking through the Idealscope, it indeed showed very clearly symmetrical H&As.

Additionally, the second, bigger stone is rated as EX per its symmetry, polish and cut, whereas the first, smaller stone is rated as a Good cut, Very Good symmetry and EX polish.

I guess I just want reassurance that the bigger stone is actually a good deal based on the specs above, including its designation as a H&A cut diamond. Any advice, reassurance, support is greatly appreciated...I''m glad that I am positive I''ll only have to go through this process once cause it sure can be stressful :)

As always, thanks in advance!

To be honest neither of these stones is rating very good on the HCA. Usually we only look at stones that score
2 or under and these are both scoring over 2. As far as symmetry and polish very good and above is good.
The eye cant really distingush the difference between EX and vg.

Here is the HCA so you can run the numbers yourself...

Do you have any images of the stone? Ideal scope?

Congratulations on choosing a setting

Diamond 1 - girdle is thin to V-thick, such large variation is undesirable. V-thick girdles are unsightly, and something about the faceting must be wonky enough to necessitate it in the first place... with the shallow crown and deeper pavilion, it's geared toward white light return at the expense of fire (those coloured flashes)

Diamond 2 - much better balance. You want an IS image to confirm no leakage, as the numbers are bordering steep/deep, but with that LGF you may well have a nice one. The IS shows only arrows - it does not show hearts, and it's perfect hearts that truly make H&A - it's much harder to get perfect hearts than nice arrows. If you're paying for a H&A stone you'll want a hearts image specifically.

Just a note - you say you've already purchased a setting. Depending on the setting style, you'll need to confirm the centre stone size it will hold - sometimes that range is surprisingly narrow, and the two stones you've posted are noticeably different in diametre and depth.

Thanks for the response...I ran the numbers through the HCA and received a VG for each level. I''m going to do some searching online to see if I can find a diamond that meets the "under 2" sweet spot. Thanks!

IS looks good.
