My little diamond dove (appropriate, no =) ) flew right out the door on July 3. I looked all over and could not find a trace of him. I figured he was gone for good, especially with all the July 4 fireworks to scare him even further away.

I went to my local pet store tonight and chatted with the sales clerk about how bummed I was over my lost bird. He said, "what, there were two ladies here 40 minutes ago who found one, they even showed my a picture." I though he was joking me!! But it was true. After some quick work I was able to locate these very kindly people who even bought food for the little guy.

They brought him in last night, so he was out for 3 full evenings. Cannot believe that he made it and that he is back. Makes me feel soooo good. Miracles do happen.

Here is his picture. He is very small, only 6 inches long.

Ditto here. I once lost my kitty for a few days and I was besides myself in worry. They really are our fur (or in this case feather) babies. I'm so happy for you!

Goodness, what a bit of luck!

So glad he's home safe and sound Beacon :appl:

awesome beacon!!

Oh how wonderful that you were able to get him back and how lucky those ladies were to catch him! I would be devistated if my bird flew away.

Wonderful news Beacon! :appl:

Tell us how they 'found' the bird. Is the bird so tame that it went up to someone?

I am so happy that he was found and that you got him back. He is such a cute little thing.

He is not that tame, so I thought I would never see him again. I think he got very exhausted and the people saw him and were able to grab him. They didn't know what he was, thought maybe he was a baby seagull =) . He was pretty close to my home as it turned out. My guess is that he could hear the noises my other two birds make and stayed nearby for that reason.

He is tired today, but eating and that's a good sign. Poor guy - don't know how he dealt with 4th of July!

What a happy ending Beacon!!!

I love hearing stories like this! :appl:

That is awesome you got your bird back!! It's always great to hear that there are good people out there who would go out of their way to reunite pets with their owners!

I'm so glad you found the bird. You must be so upset when it was gone. I have a lovebird. I was so worried about her when she hurt her foot last year.

Truly is an unbelieveable story - how fortunate you are to have your bird back!

That's such a cool story!! So glad she's back with you. :)

Your bird is beautiful!

What a relief for you to get your bird back- wow! :))

When I read the title I thought no way! I would assume that if a bird got out it would be gone forever. I am so happy that you got your bird back. What a miracle! :appl:

Many years ago I had a Noble Macaw who was a best buddy. For the first few years I had him, I kept his wings clipped so that he couldn't fly, but...his plumage was so beautiful that it broke my heart every time I did it. So I stopped.
He occasionally flew around the house but I assumed that his fitness level wouldn't allow him to be able to do any sort of distance, and when I took him outside he appeared to be apprehensive enough that he wouldn't ever break free.
We had many car rides, neighbourhood walks, no issues.
One evening I had him outside with me while I was preparing a barbecue dinner. A neighbourhood cat snuck into the yard while I wasn't particularly vigilant and attempted an abduction.
Bird took off and found a power line. From there, a tree, looking for camouflage. From there, another, higher line and more trees. Hours later, after garnering the attention of many neighbours and onlookers, he flew off into the sunset with a magpie hot on his tail.
Very disturbing. I have to admit I cried myself to sleep that night.
Placed a call to the local SPCA the following morning and went on with my day. 3 days passed and I had about given up hope when I got a call...someone had found a green bird in their backyard, about 4 km from our home. He had been sitting in one of their birch trees and hopped onto one of their hands when approached. They fed him and gave him water and he fell asleep on their kitchen counter.
When I went to pick him up the people were not that happy to see me, I think he charmed them!
Made it worth their while, though, as he was as precious to me as a child.
I can definitely relate to your story.

That's amazing. What a happy ending. I would definitely not expect to see a bird back if lost, especially if it weren't very tame. How lucky for you!

Wow, 2 stories about getting a lost bird back, this thread is awesome!

When I was a child we had a large chartreuse parakeet named Tico. He had a huge and seemingly situationally appropriate
vocabulary (He would sit on my mom's hand when she drank out of her cup and say "Hot Coffee") and was very much one of the family. He was only caged to sleep. And he loved to hitch a ride on our heads or on the dog's back.

We lived in the county then and had no garbage pickup but rather burned our trash in an incinerator at the back of our property.
I was several hundred feet from the house when I felt something in my hair. It was Tico. Trying not to panic i slowly walked back to the
house. It was windy so he held on for dear life and we arrived safely.

As kids our bedrooms were in the attic and we used to go out the window to play on the garage deck. There was no screen.
Mom told me to shut the window and as I went to do so Tico whizzed by me and out he went. We watched as he became a tiny
speck on the horizon. For hours we looked called and cried without success. Finally we went back in the house and were sitting dejectedly in the living room when we heard a familiar voice. Tico had come back the way he left and was sitting on a mirror admiring the "Pretty Bird". Never was a window shut so quickly. That was his last foray into the world. He gave us many years of pleasure.
