golly, either someon is very very generous, very very hurt, or very very upset about losing her ring!

good for that retired guy for not just pocketing it...

I imagine this ring was donated by accident. I''ve had my rings slide off so many times when digging around in boxes or piles of clothes. The person probably doesn''t want to ask for it back because they''d look pretty bad doing that.

That ring is amazing. I wonder what will happen to it.

Wow! I hope that they donated it on purpose b/c that would be a painful accident!

I''m going to guess it was par of a jewelry box/collection and whomever donated it had no idea the value.

Ill have to swing by Goodwill and check the jewelry section! Tuesdays are half off!

Judging by a similar experience my mum had...I''m gonna go with accident.

She used to keep her engagement ring (which was my nana''s engagement ring), her mum''s engagement ring, and a ring from her late sister in a shoe in a shoe box, instead of with the rest of her jewellery, reasoning that if they got burgled, at least she''d have the important ones safe.

Seems sensible.

Until she decided to go through and and get rid of all the shoes she no longer wore. Threw them all in the donation bin down the road. Wasn''t until a week or two later that she realised. We tried finding out if there was a way to recover them, but the shoes go to so many different charity shops that it was impossible.

I would have been DEVASTATED! She, on the other hand, just said she was praying that someone who really needed them found them, someone for whom that benefited greatly, not some druggie who would just pawn them to feed their addiction.

Parsley, I have a similar story. When my grandmother was very ill in the hospital before she died my mom took her 2ct diamond earrings and put them in the side pocket of her makeup bag knowing that regardless of what happened to my gram, it was unlikely that some snoopy orderly, etc would be checking itty bitty pockets (sadly we''d had a rash of thefts from our local hospital that year). Well my grandmother was discharged to go home for hospice care and no one unpacked her ditty bag so the earrings remained. The bag was sent to goodwill after she passed and my mom remembered where she''d put the earrings when she and my aunts met after the fact to split up my gram''s jewelry. It was such a sad moment for her.

HH That''s so sad! It really made my heart ache a bit when you realise what your mum must have felt the moment she realised!

It makes me very scared about my ''safe places'' you know? I have jewellery from my nana and great aunt that isn''t worth a whole lot, but looks like it could be, so I''ve been keeping it separate from my non-special jewellery, but still in a vaguely obvious jewellery holder, so that at I''ll recognise it quickly!

I think accident as well. If someone had knowingly given that to Goodwill, they most likely would have asked for a receipt to prove they gave $19k to charity. And then Goodwill would know who had given it. Sad, its a stunning ring.

That is so unfair. Was the ring in a jewelry box, at least, to make sure it was seen and not lost in the clutter.

I think that Goodwill should hold onto the ring and wait A LOT longer to see if it''s claimed and also should be checking local authorities, like the police, and also scanning the paper to see if someone placed an ad about it missing. They also shouldn''t have printed a photo of it as now dishonest people may come forward.

The reason I think it was an accident is the donor could have gotten a huge tax deduction for this.

To do so he/she would need a receipt from Goodwill, which apparently was not requested.

If it goes unclaimed I wonder if Goodwill will sell it for a discount?

yes- I''m pretty sure it was accidental. Someone may be willing to donate a 19,000$ diamond ring to Goodwill, but to do it without benefitting from the tax receipt sounds pretty crazy! :)
