BF is doing his PhD defence tomorrow and he''s soooooo nervous. Of course he has nothing to worry about because he''s brilliant and his PhD is brilliant (naturally I''d say that but it''s true!!!

) Anyway notwithstanding his brilliance he''s climbing the walls with nerves and really there''s nothing anyone can say to help him calm down at this point. Until it''s all over he''ll be a right state and he''s totally made me nervous too!!!

So by lunchtime tomorrow BF will have earned a PhD but lost all his fingernails! Lots of good vibes for an easy viva and a calm disposition tomorrow morning would be very much appreciated!

Just remind him that his advisors would have NEVER EVER let him defend unless they were 100% sure he was ready. And best of luck to him!

Oh neatfreak you are soooo right and I''ve told him that a thousand times and his pals have told him and his supervisor has told him... after all, why would an external examiner travel all the way here (UK to Ireland) if he didn''t think there was a thesis worth defending? It''s been patented three times and is being commercialised! He''s brilliant! Brilliant brilliant brilliant! (Ummm, did I mention that I think he''s brilliant?

Anyway, rationally, BF knows all this... and... it doesn''t make a blind bit of difference. Logic doesn''t factor into it, you know?

Thank you for the good luck wishes!!!

Good vibes coming your way. It is nice to see how proud you are of your BF. He is a lucky guy to have someone like you providing so much support along the way.

LOTS of dust for your BF, and calming vibes to you both!! I think it is great how supportive you are...I am sure he will return the favor when it''s your turn!

I can''t even imagine how he will feel tomorrow afternoon, hope you have fun celebration plans. Tell him we all are thinking of him!

PS check out the ring thread in LIW, I am getting ready to write you a message there

Sending buckets of good vibes.

Good luck to him! I thought the qualifying exam was far more stressful than the defense...it''s true they wouldn''t let him defend unless he was ready.

Good luck to him and to you! My hubby has a PhD, and right up until he passed his defense, he would say, "If I get my PhD...." and I would say, "When you get your PhD...." I thought it was pretty funny, but he was really, really concerned that he would never get it.

Come back and let us know how it goes tomorrow!!

Wishing your guy lots of PHD dust!

awww..good luck! I''m sure, from what you''ve said, that he''ll do brilliantly, but its hard to know that in advance and impossible not to get stressed, I''m sure.

LOL! Best of luck to your BF on his defense. I hope the sympathy nervousness subsides. You sound like such a good support to him, he''s very lucky to have you!

Here''s a way to look at it: Neatfreak is right that they only let you defend when you''ve already ''passed'', so tell you guy to stop thinking it of a test, and start thinking of it as the culmination of years of hard work and research in teh form of the presentation of his thesis to the public, as a gift. You get a Ph.D. for contributing to the wealth of human knowledge. The defence is the official ''And here it is!''

That should feel like a PARTY! And an acknowledgment. In fact at many schools, it does become a party with champagne and stuff. Hope it is where you are! (Trinity, Dublin?)

We didn''t even have a defence where I did my Ph.D., and I always felt a little sad about that, because it''s anticlimactic.

So, tell him to enjoy every minute of it! It''s his contribution and achievement, and his moment in the spotlight in return.

Thank you BizouMom, Miscka, Skippy, FireGoddess, FlyGirl, Allisonfaye, AmberGretchen, LoveinBloom, and Indy!!!

Sooooo he''s in there NOW setting up his stuff. Eeeep. Viva kicks off in half an hour. The good vibes must have worked because he was eerily calm this morning. He''s completely freaked me out! Anyway it''ll all be over soon. Another three hours or so, fingers crossed, if all goes well for him.

Indy do you mind if I don''t say which uni I''m at? Ireland is SMALL!!! BF and I are at different places though. His viva isn''t public and mine won''t be either. Is that the norm in the States?
23.gif
There won''t be any kind of faculty organised celebration after the viva but there will for sure be an unofficial one!!!

I love the attitude to the viva of it being your moment in the spotlight and he COMPLETELY deserves that. Then again, every time he presents at a conference he gets held up for an age after his paper cos his work is so important.
36.gif
I wish I could tell you all what he does but I can''t cos of the patents!!! Aaargh!!! Anyway he''s brilliant

Will post later on how it goes... keep the good vibes coming that he has an easy time... 25 more minutes to kick off...

*sends dust*

it is good to be nervous it keeps you on your toes :) but yes they will not let you defend it unless it is essentially guaranteed not to fail :)

Just think after tomorrow you can say your dating a doctor :D

Not sure about the time difference, but I think he should be done about now....thinking of you guys! Pop in later if you get a chance!
