This story touched my heart, especially during a time when most people are consumed with such negativity and selfishness (not all, but more than enough). If I happened to be in this hero''s position, I''d like to think I would do the same, although I must admit, I would be a little terrified if this man still jumped to his death even after I tried to rescue him.

Motorist Stops Man''s Bridge Jump

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Police in Portsmouth, N.H., are praising a Massachusetts man as a hero for stopping another man from jumping off the Interstate 95 bridge.

Police say a distraught 58-year-old man from Rochester had climbed over the guardrail Friday afternoon and was about to jump into the Piscataqua River when
Davin Robinson of Wilbraham, Mass., got out of his car and spoke to him.

Robinson asked the man to hug him before jumping, and when the man agreed, Robinson pulled him back over the railing. Another passing motorist helped keep the man calm until police arrived.

“I felt sad, mostly, that someone could end up in a situation like that,’’ Robinson told the Boston Globe. “In the wrong set of circumstances, that could have been you and me. We think we’re invulnerable, but life can sneak up on you.’’

The man was later admitted to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Yeap...it is evident that you are "Good People" too!

You recognized what merit the story had, and posted for all of us to see!

Thanks for the uplifting thread!

Great story. I suppose Frank Capra was on to something! Let's hope the guy goes one to Live A Wonderful Life, just like George Bailey did!

Wow. Smart move!

Thank you for posting this story.. There are great people all over the world- as a therapist who hears horrible things all day, I have to believe this (for professional and personal sanity!) and that most people are basically doing their best.

Thanks, Sugarpie, for sharing with us. There are lots and lots of good people out there-it''s just that we usually hear more about the bad stuff.

I live near New Orleans and one of my biggest take aways from Katrina is the deep and abiding goodness of people. To this day, almost five years later, there are thousands of people who have helped us in countless ways. Lots of young high school and college kids who have taken their vacation time at spring break, etc. to clean up, rebuild houses, repair churches and civic buildings and do all sorts of other helpful but thankless tasks.

I''m glad to see there are good people out there.

Wow! He did, literally, save his life. I'm glad to see this thread!

Thank you for posting this story. I hope the guy goes on to make a full recovery and moves on with his life.

This story is really touching... THank you for sharing it!

I guess I''m just wondering what the potential-jumper''s feelings are? I guess it''s kind of morbid, but sometimes people do really just want to die.

I also wonder the same. I mean, if he was that desperate to want to end it all, it''s likely going to take serious rehabilitation to become happy and functional, right?
Of course, I''m happy the outcome was what it was, I just hope this man gets the help he so desperately needs.

The part about the hug really got me.

What quick thinking on his part.

I am not a clinician, but I sometimes deal with a clinical population. Yes there are people out there who will keep trying until it happens. But most often attempts are due to depression which is a temporary mental state, one is in (mental) pain, have a narrow focus, cannot see any alternatives. If someone intervenes, the person can get treatment. That man did save that other man''s life, that day. Any one of us can get hit by a truck next week, there are no guarantees, but for now there is another chance, opportunity for this person''s life.

Thanks for sharing the story!

I think the rescuer did a great thing and I just hope that the 58yr old feels that his life can improve. Drowning is a terrible way to go.

It is not morbid. Sometimes the only way to end pain is to end it. Meds, therapy and support are great but they must be consistent; once your eyes are open to the potential and perpetual cruelty of the world it can be hard to see anything else.

As I said, I think the rescuer did a selfless act and I praise him for it. Many would have wished to intervene at the crucial moment but not many would offer support day in and day out to depressives who cannot find motivation to see through each day.

I hope that the 58yr old in this case has seen first hand that there is a glimmer of hope left in the world.

What a kind man! I hope the jumper gets good treatment and is able to overcome his issues!

This was really heartwarming. Thanks for posting it! I do hope the man he saved can find some self love again
