Hello,
I''m brand new on this forum but i''ve seen it a couple times. My boyfriend and I just put down a deposit on a diamond at Liberty Diamonds in Irvine, Ca. After visiting Robbins Bros (who were VERY condescending and snotty to me) and other chain jewelers I felt that this family owned jeweler treated me with the most respect and honesty. Yesterday my boyfriend and I put down a deposit on a $2200 .74 EGL-USA certified Round Brilliant with Excellent/Excellent, SI2, E Color. I have asked to order the full certificate and also I want the number to search it on the EGL USA website. I did inspect it myself under 10X and could spot the inclusion but with the naked eye I felt this diamond was to my liking. Currently I am waiting for the settings that the jeweler ordered so I can choose what I want. I guess my question is if I got an okay deal or not? And if anyone suggests any further questions I should ask?

Thank You

Hi Holly and welcome!

If you could post all the info on the report when you have it, that would be very useful, also can you post what the grade setting inclusions are please such as clouds, feather and so on. Does the price include the setting? Also what I would suggest and get this in writing, make the sale final on the diamond checking out to your satisfaction in all aspects with an independant appraisal, here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

EGL USA are said to be the strongest of the EGL labs but an appraisal would be prudent.

Thanks for your reply...I think troy (the gemologist) put the number on my receipt but he has horrible writing and I can''t make out exactly what the number is. I emailed him to send it to me TYPED haha...or I''ll ask when I go in to choose my setting. When I get that number and put it in on the EGL USA website what is that going to tell me (will it tell me the specs you are asking for?)? Is the whole certificate going to pop up? I still want to order my own hard copy just to have for myself. The mini report (a little blue and white card) at the jeweler did not say specifically what the inclusions are so that''s why I asked to order the full report. I do know that it was graded out of the Los Angeles EGL-USA location. He also wrote down the specs I provided above on my deposit receipt. I''m not entirely sure what the different inclusions are supposed to look like but from looking at pics from the internet I can "un-confidently" say that maybe the inclusion is a small feather that is slightly off center (it kinda maybe looked like what I can only describe as an untrained person like maybe a small bubble looking thing?) HAHA! Hard to describe. That is the only inclusion that I noticed when looking at it from 10X. When I go back I will ask the jeweler to specifically point out the inclusions and explain what they are to me and where they are. Also, regardless of where I bought my diamond and where it was certified, I always planned on getting it independently appraised...would I want to do this before it is set into my setting or can I take my whole ring in for independant appraisal. Sorry for all the questions!

The $2200 price does not include the setting...just the loose diamond. We were aiming for a ring around $3000.

Thanks!
Holly

Do it before setting, it is more accurate as setting it may hide some inclusions, color and weight slightly off.

If I do it before setting, how do I go about doing that? I have already put a deposit down on the stone so do I just ask the jeweler if I can have the stone independently appraised?

yap, he can send it there himself as some appraisers do accept stones directly from the vendors. Make sure you suggest the appraiser and not he. Also, if he does not allow it, something might be wrong.

Hi Holly

Just check that the diamond does have a full EGL USA report, sometimes with these little cards that can be all you get, not saying that is the case in this instance but best to check. The price is a bit higher than online but around what I would expect for EGL, let us know about the report.

Oh I will. I have definitely requested the full report and am not buying the diamond without it. He said this is no problem and he will order it for me asap. I have checked out this jeweler with the better business bureau (A+ Rating) and they have very good customer reviews which Is why I chose Liberty Diamond Cutters. I am waiting on him to answer back my emails. The next time I go in I am going to thoroughly re-check my diamond again though it looked eye-clean to me, my future sister in law, and my boyfriend but who knows after he points out the inclusions I might change my mind haha! I will definitely post the full specs when I get the information. I have been doing as much research on EGL USA as I can and from what studies HAVE been conducted on it, it seems they are softer on their color grades but usually fair on their clarity grades....though its probably not a large enough set of samples to be positive on that. I care more if the clarity grade is actually an I-grade because I really don''t want to go THAT low. If the color is off by 1 or 2 I would probably be okay with that because I could not see any color with my eyes when I looked at it.
