I recently have been lurking in the forums and wanted to see if this is a good diamond. I am looking to propose soon but it seems a lot of the terminology and intricacies is a bit overwhelming

Budget: 11-12K
Color: I heard H color is okay with cushions
Carat: 1.5
clarity - VS2/VS1. SL1 is good if cannot be seen with the naked eye but i heard those are hard to come by

My girlfriend wants a halo type of ring so i think cushions or round would be a perfect fit. Please let me know what other information you may need.

Sorry for being vague but i am not sure what else to include. Thanks everyone

does your girlfriend want a cushion style diamond?

Yes. she wants either round or cushion.

Is the $11-$12k for the diamond alone or total budget for stone and setting? You definitely need pics/images.
Example...not a good cushion

Cushions with better light return...I didnt really evaluate these stones for suggestion. Just want to show the reason we need pictures.

How can you tell the difference between a good cushion and bad? I am assuming depth and table aren’t as important with cushion comparing to round

Cushions are much more complex than rounds. You need to see them in motion in a video to get a good sense for them. Rounds are a ton easier. If she's ok with either, I might just suggest a round to save yourself a lot of headache. Not only are cushions already tricky, there are different kinds of cuts, and if you don't know which style she likes it'll be even harder.

I don’t know if this is something your gf would like, but I love round diamonds in a cushion halo. Here’s some pictures:

I love this idea!!

What would be ideal depth at 1.5ct?

Most super ideal cuts are b/t 61.4 - 61.8% total depth. you will not see a super ideal cut >62% depth. I'm one of the few PSers here who do prefer a round stone closer to 62% in depth but not over 62%.

I would like to see this - D VS, Ex. HCA Link

There are many D-E IF-VS options with promising HCA score & no images (thus no ready guarantee of optical symmetry & that arrows pattern)... this happens to be spready & small-tabled & tempting to me.

The PS search is a rather brazen naked variety of arbitrage & works this way.

IMO, Cut too deep at 62.7%. The cutter make sure that this stone hit the magic weight of 1.5ct to fetch a higher premium. Be careful of stones hitting the magic weight of 1.5ct, 1.75ct, 2ct, 2.5ct...etc,etc.

That stone scores well on the HCA tool, so I think it could be a good contender with lots of Fire?:

Light Return: Very Good
Fire:
Excellent
Scintillation:
Very Good
Spread:
Very Good
HCA Score :
1.6 - Excellent - within FIC range

I am slightly confused, though - the Spread rating is only 'Very Good' but the Looks Like image is pointing at 'Bigger', the biggest of the categories. I'm not sure if that's a glitch?? @Garry H (Cut Nut) might need to confirm, if I can be annoying and summon him by tagging him! :D

This would be gorgeous for with a halo. It is fashioned like an old mine cut but with all the right angles to give you ideal light return. If you think
your GF likes the idea of an old/antique looking stone this would be a great idea.

You could also go with a super-ideal round if your budget is $11-$12k for the stone alone. The nice thing about going with a round in a cushion halo
is that you get ideal light return but with a cushion shape (from the halo).

the diamond is I color. only sl1 if it doesn't have too many issues to the naked eye

any thought on GIA lab vs IGI lab?

i think i am trying to stay away from cushion because people are saying its tough for newbies to find a good cushion diamond. I opted for round since its easier to find a good round diamond with my limited knowledge. she is cool with either one.
OK, except that I'm not a newbie with regards to August Vintage Cushion cut diamonds. They have superior light return. That's why I suggested this one.

This. Yes cushions are hard to shop for if you don't know what to look for. But if your GF is open to antique style stones AVCs are among the best.

not saying you're a newbie but I am. sorry if that came off that way. I am not too familiar with antique style stones and regular stones. As I said, I am not very well versed in this industry and do value your input. Thanks!

I understood what you were saying! I just didn't want you to stop the search for a nice cushion based on what your friends were saying, especially if your fiance wants a cushion. No need to be wary of cushion shopping as we can help you find a nice one. Is your fiance involved in the shopping process, or is it supposed to be a surprise?

I just worry that if she isn't looking for an antique stone she might not like the AV, even though it's the best of that stone type. Has she looked at antique vs. modern cushions?
