Hi all,

I finally found the perfect engagement ring, now the jeweler wants to know if I want to pay an extra $90 to go from a 14k white gold crown to a platinum crown. The ring is a 14kt gold eternity band with a round solitaire, similar (but a little smaller) to this one.

My only motive to upgrade would be the safety of the stone itself (don''t want the crown to loosen and fall out), but seeing as it only a $1400 diamond I''m leaning towards the gold crown. Any thoughts?

I''d pay the extra $90 for platinum.

Ditto to Mrs. Salvo.

Platinum is the favored metal to set high value diamonds for a list of reasons. Strength and hardness are the most important in my opinion. Platinum is denser and secures diamonds more soundly than gold. $90 seems a small amount for the safety of mind the platinum head provides. Best of Luck!

To be the voice of dissent here, go for plat if you don''t mind paying the extra, but I have worn gold without any problems for many years now.

You''re not the lone dissenter. If the rest of the ring is gold, I''d go with a gold head. It''s perfectly durable. What I dislike about platinum (I have one ring that is yellow gold with platinum head) is that it develops a grey patina and looks "scuffed" over time. My white gold pieces always look good.

Gold can be a perfectly fine option too. The benefits of platinum are nice, but they can be somewhat marginal. So, as long as the cost increase for platinum is correspondingly marginal, I think it can be a nice upgrade, but I can see how others could view it as somewhat superfluous.

soo what''d you get?
