I see tons of really *awesome* custom jewelry out there if you like platinum, but what if you want gold - maybe even 14k gold. Yeah, I know it sounds cheap which is not the intent, but in doing searches on PS when it comes right down to it that seems to be what is most durable... there is so much debate between which is better... and from what I''ve seen I prefer the color of white gold and it seems as far as banging it on things and *holding* polish, it''s better... and I''m not doing pave...
So... who does white gold custom jewelry? And how do you stand waiting for a stone to show up?? LOL!!

I would try to find something in Palladium. Palladium is part of the Platinum family and the least dense of the group, but has been used in jewelry occasionally for many years now. The best part is the price is around the cost of 14k and the fact that it is a solid color metal you will have no worries about it changing color so you keep the nice white luster.

Yeah, I''ve considered that... it really isn''t the price, I''m happy to pay for platinum, but palladium is the softest in the platinum family - that''s my understanding at least... some like to use 100% but I heard it bends and dents the most... I have a 14k yg 4mm comfort fit band that I bang on everything and have never developed a habit of being gentle... it bangs on tables it bangs on washing machines, dishwashers... cars, whatever you name it... and while it isn''t quite as shiny as it was FIFTEEN years ago - it''s still damn shiny and there''s not ONE ding on it anywhere... now when I think about putting a diamond in a setting and having much smaller pieces of metal I think, holy crud I better make it of cryptonite! LOL

Ok so I did not really answer your question (big my-bad), but maybe this could also help. Platinum is softer than gold but much denser. Think of gold a piece of wood for a second. What happens when you scrape it? A piece of wood scrapes off right? Now think of Platinum and a think Play-Doh and again what happens when you scrape it? Ahh.. It doesn’t scrape a chunk off does it? No, it disperses and concaves in while continuing to have the same mass.

Hope this helps.

Personally i have 14kW band so i''m kind of opinionated

Cehra,

Aren''t you the one living a parallel life to mine?

I''ve had White gold for 15 years. It has just started to look a little less white. If I could find a great setting I''d be happy to go with white again.

One of my friends has plat. It does get a grey patina which I could live with too.

my e-ring is 22K hammered gold. i do not wear it 24/7.....only when i leave the house and that includes trips to the farmers market and lumber yard. eventually, it will need to be rehammered as yes it is soft and will smooth out over years. however, it is very heavy and thick so i don''t worry about it. also, because it is 22K gold, its going to have more of a tendency to dent rather than suffer a loss of gold and alloy as a result of being scratched. ever been to a museum and seen those ancient gold rings and torques from 2500BC?!

my wedding band is 2 mm 18K gold which i wear 24/7 even when gardening. will it last 20 years? probably not....but i''m ok with that. i love the patina it has developed with the 2.5 years of hard and heavy wear.

personally....and this is only my opinion....i think its a bit unrealistic to expect a wedding set to look as good as the day it was bought....idealistic but unrealistic. i sort of look at jewelry the same way i look at my aging: its all experience and an indication of time well spent.

heheheh ;) I actually like the slight yellow tinge to WG much more than the steel color of plat. WG is a softer color and I think it will look better with a stone that is in the J range anyway (JMO) I know computer/internet colors aren''t always accurate but I thought this ring was a good example...
the outer stripes are WG and the inner one is plat... I guess plat to me looks more like chrome or something which is lovely but I guess I think WG is more feminine. Bonus that it''s cheaper too! bahahaha ;)

I know gold wears thin but from what I understand platinum bends more easily and that''s what I want to avoid... I don''t mind dings but I want things sturdy... but regardless, I still like the look of wg better than plat but most of the designers work in plat... are there exceptions? I mean there must be!
