Gold hits new record per/ounce price!

I made the colossal mistake of selling some of my gold at around $1200./troy ounce and another batch at $1350. I still netted a nice profit, but at $1850., it would have been more. On the other hand, the price could have tanked and I'd have lost out on a good opportunity. Who knew????

Well, I am set on making a single direction double-loop-in-loop chain, that will look pretty much exactly like this (link below), only heavier, since mine will be in 20 gauge rather than the 22 gauge that this is in. The silver one I've already made has identical endcaps, minus the granulation, and a S-hook instead of a toggle. I will likely do that endcap again. It's a bit tricky, but lovely when finished.
It won't take all of my wire, I'm fairly certain, and since I'm making it for myself, the labor is free. I paid $4200 for the wire, and I guarantee that even before the price hikes, there is no way on earth I could have gotten a chain like that for $4200 or under. Besides, I get the fun of making something! Woot! ;))

Well, just a little while ago, I bought 3 oz of 22K gold wire for a chain project and because I wanted to have a bit more gold - 2 birds with one stone. I bought at $1485/oz, and look at it now. Yikes!

Yeah. But. It ain't gonna stay high forever. I remember when the metals were high in the late 70's or early 80's. It now seems insane that anyone bought anything made of gold or silver made then. Unless you have an urgent need for something right now, wait. (By the way, I didn't mean wait on projects requiring 3 ounces of gold, ksinger! I meant to wait on adding a 24K gold bangle to your set, AGBF!)

Deb...should i sell my 24K necklace? it weight 70 grams.

You would be crazy to sell that DF. No one I know, and I know a LOT of women with many many pricey pieces of gold in their collections,
owns anything like that. Pure 24K? Keep it to pass down to your eldest.

Of course. Why wouldn't I be serious? You are making a really original piece of high karat gold jewelry; that is what people reading the gold thread want to read about! It ia all we want to read about!

Yep, I did the same. Sold a lot of gold when it was around $1200. I did get a great overall price for the amount, but now would have made so much more! Oh well!

Weren't diamonds exceptionally high around that time too? I'm planning a project but simply won't pay the prices that are out there and am willing to wait a year and wear fashion jewelry in the meantime (silver pieces, etc.).

i'm selling some 24K scrap gold that i purchased last week + some 1 oz. Maple Leaves.i don't think i will sell the chain.

My father gave me some solid 14k-18k pieces after he went through his mid-life crisis in the '80's (gold nugget bracelet, giant rope chains, herringbones, etc.) that I've held on to since the 1990's. I also have many pieces I bought for myself while I was in college that I've never traded in. Saving them all for a rainy day, and will continue to do so. When gold went up a few years ago I thought about selling but wasn't in the position where I needed to and I'm so glad I didn't.

I'm with you in that I bought most of what my husband and I own jewelry-wise when gold was under $300 an troy ounce. Gold will NEVER be very inexpensive again. It just won't happen.
