PS - I want to say thank you for all the information this site has given me. I am now in the process of returning a 1.36 F VS1 GIA XXX for a 1.4x AGS 000 G VS1 that has ideal proportions through one of our vendors. I'm awaiting IS images, but according to the HCA, this AGS will blow the GIA out of the water! I don't want to divulge too much information about the one I'm looking at... cuz it's the ONE!

Sure, I'm giving up a rare F, but I truly believe the G will perform alot better, plus it's bigger!

I will post pictures of the completed product when I get everything done!!!

I have G VS1 and love it, but please don't expect a AGS0 to blow a GIA XXX out of the water! That is very unlikely! 1.4x is a very nice size, though, especially if it has a larger diameter than your other stone!

I think you will be delighted with it. I can't wait to see your pictures.

Very true. Well this XXX to be exact... I think I've done enough due diligence to *hope* this one is the *one*. The F I have is nice, please don't get me wrong, but seeing how the HCA would have weeded this one out (scoring a 3.6, still pretty decent I'd say), and seeing how there's partial leakage under the table, I think I can do better. True, I'm giving up a rarer stone color wise, but knowing what I know now, I do value light performance. I don't want to have just another diamond that is "ok" in my eyes (as well as my soon to be's), but the new one will be about $800-$1000 less expensive AND will perform better.

To her , carat size is of importance without sacrificing too much. To me, it's cut and color (then size and clarity). She already compromised on the shape (princess to RB), so I want to do all I can to maximize my budget for HER. This one falls at 1.1 or 1.2 on the HCA, and I am pretty sure I'm making an (more) educated choice! :read:

The spread on this one is 0.17mm larger in diameter, pretty substantial I'd say for the price difference.

You made the choice I would have made ::) Whether it's right.. who knows! But saving money alone is worth it. G VS1/VS2 is my own personal sweet spot.

In this case I would have made the same decision as well. And I'm glad that you clarified that the new AGS stone may perform better than your particular GIA ex ex ex. I think it's important that people realize this is not always the case. GIA ex ex ex will very seldom be a dog. There are a lot of cut nuts on PS that will only consider super ideal cut stones, and by doing so will sometimes pass an equally beautiful diamond. This makes sense when shopping online and you can't physically see the diamond, but IMO many very nice stones mat be passed by because of how they scored on the HCA when IRL they may very well having amazing performance. That said I also only considered stones that scored well on the HCA because I too shopped online, but I think it's important to mention for a person who may be entering their info into the HCA for the first time and thinking that their diamond must be a dog because it scored below a 2. We know that may not be the case. =)

Yes, there are plenty of superideal cuts that are GIA XXX, so that is why I am also glad you clarified that your first stone had a poor HCA score. You should have not bought that one in the first place! ;)) But, it is great you realized you could get a better cut stone and a larger one by going to G VS1. Like Dreamer, I think G is a great value and my ring and earrings diamonds are all G VS ideal cuts.
