I feel very good about this since ERD is obviously a highly recommended vendor, and I''ve done a search and heard nothing but accolades about them and their services. I HOPE to find a diamond on thursday there. If I do, should I or do I need to get an appraisal of the diamond if I''m seeing it in person before purchasing? Their website says they have an inhouse appraisal service, and even though I know that ERD is a reputable place, is that a good idea? I don''t even know where to take a diamond to get appraised where I live. (Lower CT)

Oh another thing- how do I go about getting insurance? I''m assuming this should be done before the diamond leaves the store, either with me or in the mail. Can I call my homeowners insurance company, or should I go with someone who specializes in jewelry insurance?

Aeromax,

Just my two cents... I would buy the stone and then take it to be appraised somewhere local (or an outside source) for insurance purposes. Any diamond you buy from ERD (I have not purchased anything from them) should appraise for what you paid or more. I am understanding that you think you''ll be paying more for diamond then you think you should?

Not at all. Based on the feedback I''ve heard people give about ERD, I have no reason to distrust them at all. But I always hear people talk about getting a stone appraised after they''ve bought it, and I was wondering if it was necessary for me to do it? If it''s necessary for insurance, then I suppose I DO need to do it.

I would get it appraised after. My insurance doesn''t require to get the piece appraised, just a recipt.

What do you use for insurance? Is it a particular jewelery insurer?

Aeromax,

When MH purchased my ring from ERD almost 3 yrs ago, Mark included an independent appraisal for us ...It was done by an appraiser in the DD, close to Mark's office, and he did a great job....we liked him alot. That was the only appraisal we got for my ring. We did not have any reservations about taking the diamond to an appraiser that Mark recommended- he is a honest businessman whom we trusted very much. You should ultimately do what you feel comfortable with. If you feel the need to get another appraisal by an appraiser of your own choice, it wouldnt hurt.

When it comes to the insurance, I believe after the appraisal we had the documents sent to the insurance company (whom I had spoken to a few days before and gave some preliminary info to them). Once they received the faxed appraisal report, the ring was covered before it even left the office. You can either choose to insure your new ring with your homeowners ins. company, or have it independently insured with a company such as Chubb or Jewelers Mutual, etc. I would first check to see what type of policy your homeowners offers, then I would investigate other companies if need be.

Have fun at ERD on Thursday, and best of luck!!!!

If the people on this board who are more knowledgeable than myself think that using Mark''s recommendation for an independant appraiser is a good idea, then I have no problem with it. Like I said, I don''t see any reason to distrust Mark or ERD for any reason, based on the opinions of people here. I only want the appraisal for insurance purposes and nothing else. I will also call my insurance agency and see what they can cover. Thanks for the input.

Well, Im sure some people might feel differently, but that''s the way we felt...we trusted Mark completely. Plus, we knew we would get another appraisal in the future ( I will probably get another one in the next yr or two just to keep everything updated), and I will take the ring to someone around here (I am in NJ). I can get it re-verified then. Bottom line is that you just need to do what youre comfortable with.
