i''m going to look at some GIA stones their corresponding reports.

i have read through the FAQs, and have seen numerous postings on ideal cuts, comparisons between labs, etc...(this site rocks - pun intended ;) )

i was hoping to get a short list of stats (ideal crown&pavillion angle, stone depth, etc) that i could refer to while looking at stones.

OR

should i just accept a GIA report with cut grade as ''excellent'' as really excellent - so i don''t have to do any evaluation myself (which is often confusing!)

thanks a million

Do NOT accept a GIA report of excellent, they are very lenient in their cut grading. I made this mistake and am considering a recut since it''s way too late for a refund. Not all GIA excellents are bad of course, but there are some. I hear AGS is pretty reliable on cut, but I''m sure one of the experts will help you with specific stats. There are many combinations that are great, so you could find a few diamonds online and run them thru the HCA. That really helped me learn (though a little too late) what stats make a great diamond. Crown and pavilion angles are really important, and that''s what the HCA really helps with. Happy shopping!

hi kelli,

thanks for the input. although i would luv to buy online, i''m pretty much ''locked in'' to the jeweler (paid in full + they are friends of family...sigh).

i''m hoping w/my handy stats, i can make a fairly informed decision...!

the other option i''m looking at is to seriously buy a beginner ideal scope and carry it with me :)

I would recommend all of the above. Ideal cope is great for light return for rounds. And dont be shy about carrying info around with all the specs and stats you should be looking for. I carried a binder of threads I printed that had some good thoughts about what were ideal stats. Because once you find something that looks nice, its great to put your mind at ease to double check against stats listed here on PS about what works the best. Especially for rounds where there is some consensus as to what specs lend to the best cuts and light performance.

There are some things I do know-- well I''m pretty sure at least, maybe someone else will chime in to correct me if I''m wrong. And this is assuming you''re looking for a round brilliant. As far as I know, table should be between 53 and 57. Depth should be between 59 and 62.4ish--- although a lot of people seem to like to keep it in the 61s. I think girdle should be between thin and slightly thick and most RBs have no cutlet. Crown angles-- and this is where I messed up-- are supposed to be between 34 and 35, with pavilion angles in the 40 range, not to exceed 41 unless it works really nicely with the crown angle. The crown and pavilion angles have to work together nicely to make a great cut, and that''s where the HCA comes in. If it''s a friend of the family jeweler, you should be able to find a computer and run his stones thru it(HCA) to weed out bad performers. Getting an idealscope would work too I''m sure, but using a computer might be a cheaper option. Hope this helped

An idealscope is like $30 IIRC and seriously not a bad tool you can take with you to assess a stone also I would have a look at this thread where Lorelei posts a cheat sheet for round specs :) https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/preferred-specs-cheat-sheet-for-rounds.88548/ you can use that as well, I would also run it by here for extra back up :).

Good Luck :)

good point...once you select have them hold it for a day and you can always run the stats and pictures by us PSers who will not be short of comments and tell you what we think. I have been here countless times looking for reinforcement and people here have seen and read a lot about diamonds so its always good to a second opinion (or a third, fourth, fifth, etc..) !!

good luck and have fun with the process!

Good points!! I didn''t realize idealscopes were so cheap! Maybe I''ll get one too.
