Going for that magic 3 ct. upgrade from a 2.11 RB, how does it look?

I am interested in this diamond......however the HCA is only a 3.6 so that is worrisome...what are possible problems with this stone? Light leakage??

GIA 3.0 ct.
G color
SI2 clarity
Measurements: 9.24 x 9.21 x 5.52mm
Cut: Good
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Good
Depth: 59.8
Table: 58
Crown angle: 33
Pavilion angle: 39.4
Girdle: Thick-Vary thick (faceted) 5.5%

The (reputable) seller states it is beautifully cut and is gorgeous in person

Thoughts???

Too shallow, will have obstruction issue in that the stone will go dark when you look at it within an arms length.

HI:

Is the thick girdle getting it "just" to it's 3.0 ctw benchmark? I always wonder about this when the stone doesn't have those ahem "ideal" proportions....

cheers--Sharon

always be careful with those magic ct number stones.

i have a rule of thumb when diamond hunting--i always buy something at least .o5 from any carat weight band. 2.05, 2.55, 2.9...........3.05 and so on. you dont worry about poor cutting to maximize CARATS

I would definitely pass on that stone.

Not worth it just to hit the 3ct mark.

You all rock! I am going to pass on this one for sure.

I am SO BUMMED! I had found a absolutely perfect 2.68 that was great all the way around and then I called today to try and secure it and it is no longer available

I am keeping my classic platinum Tiffany 6 prong setting that my current 2.11 RB is in.....just have to change the head out with a bigger one.

Ooh - hope you find another soon!

Hi Kristie,

You definitely did right to pass on this diamond, an explanation as to the issues this diamond could have are as follows.

The stone is what we call a shallow/shallow due to the crown and pavilion angles both being shallow. This can cause an effect callled obstruction which can be seen as a diamond visibly darkening at close scrutiny due to the viewer''s head or body blocking the light to the stone. These diamonds can be more suitable for earrings or pendants because of this as normal viewing distances and angles don''t apply as when set in a ring. Below is a video titled Head Obstruction by Garry Holloway which shows what to look for, bottom right of the page.

http://diamondscope.pricescope.com/

To avoid shallow proportioned diamonds, the Holloway Cut Advisor will generally warn of such combos, also try to keep crown angles between 34 - 35 degrees and pavilion angles between 40.6 - 41 degrees and with 40.6 pavilions an Idealscope is needed in case of rounding issues with GIA and to show if obstruction is a problem.
