I purchased a pair of 1 carat total round H&A studs from Good Old Gold about three years ago. They were/are beautiful and I love them, but unfortunately I lost one while swimming this weekend. They weren't insured and I'm pretty devastated but planning on replacing the lost diamond as soon as possible. I am going to call GOG tomorrow, but since they are closed on Monday and I'm kind of going nuts (I'm sure you guys understand!), I came here to try to get your thoughts on the situation:

My mom offered to give me one of the diamonds out of her studs because she rarely wears them (VERY VERY nice of her!), but I looked at them this morning and, although she thought they were the same size, they are actually noticeably smaller than mine, so that wouldn't work. She offered to let me trade both diamonds in to use toward a replacement. They are not H&A and she doesn't have any information on them. We think they are .4 each (mine are .5 each), they don't look yellow to me at all and don't have any visible inclusions, but that's all I know. They are set in yellow gold. They are definitely not as well cut as my H&A, but they still look pretty good to me. Do you think that GOG would accept them as a trade and about how much credit to you think I could get for them? Enough to get a .5 carat H&A? I think my other earring is an H SI1, so that's about the color and clarity I'd be looking for. Also, how do you think this would affect my upgrade policy? Would they just deduct the cost of the lost diamond and add in the cost of the new one?

Obviously no one can answer these questions definitively, but I'd love to hear your opinions or experiences to help ease my mind a little! Although I can afford to replace the diamond, it's still a lot of money to me and I'd like to avoid putting in much cash if possible.

Thank you so much for any insight you can give me!

I don't think anyone can answer those questions. You could try selling your Mom's pair on diamond bistro
and the used jewelry form. Not sure if you could get enough to buy a .5 h&a though. Diamond prices have gone
Up so much!

Thanks for the reply. That is what I was afraid of. I am kicking myself for not being more careful, or at least for not getting insurance, ugh!

After you speak with them on Tuesday, you'll have a better idea, but you could either sell your mom's pair to help finance the cost of a new single diamond for you, or would you sell your single stone back to them instead and wear your mom's pair? Would that be worth considering?

I had a pair of 1ctw studs from a local jeweler that IDJ let me trade in when I bought my 1.5 ctw GIA studs from them :appl:
