What's with this? Looking around Good Old Gold's new website, I saw a number of clarity enhanced diamonds for sale, which stunned me. I thought clarity enhanced diamonds are a huge ripoff -- and GOG is supposed to be an extremely reputable vendor. Am I missing something?

Yup.

You are missing something. Do a search in the old threads, there is one where Jonathan explains why they carry them. They do not carry the truly terrible ones, like the fracture filled. But they do carry some.

I wouldn't buy one for a ring stone. But for a pendant or earrings... as long as the vendor is reputable, I would consider it.

The main issue with clarity enhanced diamonds is making sure that the buyer knows up front that they are clarity enhanced. As long as all treatments are disclosed, there is nothing inherently wrong with them. They can be well suited to a low stress/low abrasion environment like pendants or earrings, especially on a tight budget.

I tend to shy away from them for rings, because rings are high traffic and highly scrutinized, so the treated stone is more vulnerable and the treatment is more obvious (if you know what you're looking for).

The other problem is some of the treatments are not permanent. Some are. The ones that are, are typically safer. People who buy the non-permanent type and don't know it are horrified when they find one day they have a hugely included diamond on their hands when the enhancement wears off or falls out.

Here's Jon's video on the matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NQs0xnWz9k

A market for clarity enhanced diamonds does exist. As long as treatment is disclosed so that the buyer can make an informed decision and the price of the stone is discounted accordingly, the free market will handle the rest. I personally would avoid CE stones in a ring, but if I were in the market for a pendant or earrings and a beautiful CE GOG diamond came my way, I'd certainly consider it.

I'm not a huge fan of any clarity enhanced stones but where they have been done and what has been done to them makes a huge difference. Reputable vendors that guarantee what has been done to them can be vastly different to cheaper products that have been fracture filled (often badly) in places like China and India. GOG prices them accordingly and mostly does not market them as something they are not - unlike many sellers that do not disclose the treatments to their customers. You also have to be leery of places that do not guarantee the treatments because many of these stones end up looking like balls of frozen split over time with wear tear and things like heat and water.

I was under the impression GOG did carry fracture-filled diamonds? I'm pretty sure I've seen some before on their site.
