This morning on our local radio station one of the hosts of the morning show set up a Go Fund Me to buy new tires for her car. I'm pretty sure this is just a joke and to get a rise out of people but callers were outraged and were definitely not holding back when they called in to give their opinions.

Another local station has set up a fund to get our governor out of office. I guess that's pretty bad when people dislike you so much they will pay to get you to leave!

What do you think of the current trend of Go Fund Me being used by people who can clearly pay their own way? On the other hand have you donated to a worthy Go Fund cause lately?

I think we are living in the GoFundMe world now. I see so many that are people asking for things they have no right asking for. :roll I have had to pay my own way in life and I think people need to be more responsible for themselves. You need new tires? Go buy some. That's life.:boohoo:
It's a real shame though because there are so many great causes that we could donate to and they are being blocked out by the ridiculous ones.

I'm a huge animal lover so I tend to donate to animal causes. They can't pay their own bills so they depend on us to care for them. That's a cause I can get behind. :mrgreen2:

I don't mind donating to GFM accounts that I personally think are worthy. I may not be able to contribute a meaningful amount, but for some cases every little bit helps. I usually choose things like medical care for people, or animal welfare cases.

Sigh. It's the gofundme generation. Somehow a lot of people feel that they are entitled to things out of their financial reach, just by virtue of the fact that other people have them. The incessant coverage of celebrity lifestyles fuels this, along with social media. I'm all for fundraising due to a natural catastrophe or illness, but a lot of the gofundme pages can be boiled down to I want this, so gimme.

Most of my charitable contributions go to reputable animal rescue organizations and environmental causes.

I donate to causes I find worthy, whether they're GoFundMe or other. That being said, I'll never forget when a distant friend promoted her GoFundMe page all over social media to send her daughter to a volleyball camp. That's the kind of stuff that drives me crazy.

I personally think a lot of them are scams. Even if they don't start out as scams. My neighborhood created one for our lawn guy. His wife died of breast cancer and he had 5 kids, including a baby. We raised close to $18k and he bought a brand new truck and raised our prices. So he is not my landscaper anymore. And while I don't think it was a scam, I think that no one intended their generous contributions to buy a truck. It was for the kid's care.

*shrug*
I'm going through a divorce, working two jobs, and raising 2 children alone. It's easy to say "Go buy whatever" if something like a flat tire wouldn't set off a chain reaction of crappiness that might take you a week to recover from. I have never done a GFM but I have donated to some. If I didn't want to donate I just wouldn't. My child's classmate just lost her house in a fire and both her cats did not make it. We organized a clothing drive and donated to a fund for her father.

I got sent a wedding invitation last year with the wedding website link. I logged on, and immediately on the site is a place to put your credit card information.

They were crowd sourcing $$ for their honeymoon. It said “donate $x to buy bride a massage, $2x to buy us both a massage, $y to buy us a dinner” etc.

Really? F off. I declined to attend their wedding. My husband and I are both from cultures that give cash for weddings but you don’t act entitled to request for cash. It was so uncouth. Gross.

I’ve also seen Go Fund Me accounts for traffic tickets, car registrations, car accidents, etc.

I’m a part of multiple dog rescue groups, and people constantly ask for vet money, and I won’t even support those unless it was an emergency accident. It’s gross. If you can’t feed your pet consistently or get it routine care, you need to find it another home.

I think the excessive use of GFM has made people hardened by them.

I feel like I have been living under a rock because I have only seen go fund me pages when someone is sick or has passed away.

Do people promote these pages or are they just on the site?

I’m going to set up a GoFundMe for my early retirement. Then I can spend all night watching World Cup matches this summer. (And annoy people on Pricescope during the day). Who’s willing to contribute? :$$):

My son is in 5th grade and recently the father of a classmate passed away in an accident so they setup a fund to help with the funeral expenses. So that I can see, also animals that are found abused and in need of medical care taken in by a shelter, that would make sense.

So it has its place but it also like anything else had potential for abuse. The radio host who set up the fund for her tires reasoned that there is no harm in asking but as someone else mentioned that hardens people against giving for legit people in need, because she even admitted she could afford them but didn't want to pay for them. SMH

I love that there is such a site and do contribute to a select few. We all have times in life where things just happen and we need a bit of help.

That said... Some of the things I have seen people ask for help with!
The people who think they can just mess around in life then set up a GFM because they want something just annoy me.
Usually the annoyance is reserved for those I know personally so know the back story and it is truly just appalling. (able to work but don't feel like it so they ask others to pay for completely just for fun sorts of things)

I donate when groups I am in set the funds for some members in need.

I usually donate to well-known funds, for victims of natural disasters. Here and abroad.

I would never randomly donate for tires, unless I know the person.

Go Fund Me for the Governor to leave? Are they planning to bribe him ;-) ? And what is their target sum to raise?

Come to think of it...Go Fund Me for mmm...early retirement for some of our politicians, lol?

Well if that is the case I'm surprised someone hasn't get up a go FundMe Page to get rid of Trump.

Yes they are trying to bribe him to leave our state, the target sum is one billion dollars, I would actually take this more seriously if it was $100,000 but a billion? Not going to happen. That is how much the people in my state hate the governor, we are over 100 days without a state budget and our capital city is considering bankruptcy, it is a mess.

Trump's ego is keeping him in the White House. No amount of money would make him resign. He looks miserable and if he had a brain in his head he would see how he is losing. This idiot hasn't even figured out that his tweets show us all just how low his IQ really is.
