Go below the "1 ct standard" for a better quality stone?

1ct + with an ideal cut from ES or .75+ from ACA H&A?

As you'll notice, they're listed ascending by price. The first one came up in the search, but even my amateur eye can tell that one is of inferior quality.

I might be wrong here so someone correct me if I am . . . but that first one you listed is NOT an Expert Selection diamond. Just because a diamond on WF has 4 stars doesn't automatically make it an ES. It has to say 'round_ideal_cut' ??
Hate to be the corrector, but this is incorrect.

The stone he listed IS an expert selection stone......which is denoted on the ideal-scope image with the ES cherries symbol.

Hiker, WF's Expert Selection criteria is 'value for the money'. While it's true that most ES stones are ideal-cut stones (many of which just miss the ACA designation), it's not a requirement, and it's not the priority.

ES stones are stones that have been hand-picked as offering the most value for the money. Every now and then, a non-ideal stone fits those parameters....may not be the most exceptionally cut but offers very good value for the money.

Can you just tell us the maximum you want to spend on the diamond and we''ll tell you what our top choices would be?

Thanks for the clarification Alj . . . so is there a difference in the ES diamonds listed as round cut versus ideal round cut? If one sticks to ES stones listed as "ideal round" will the chances of a better diamond be increased?

And if I may ask . . . why is the first ES stone he listed the only one that doesn't have the cherry clip next to the enlarge link? The cherry is only on the ideal scope while all the other ES diamonds have the cherry next to both the ideal scope AND the enlarge button od the diamond picture? Just wondering what sets this ES diamond apart fom the others that its web link address is different AND the cherry picture is NOT next to the enlarge button?

Thanks again Alj . . .

I ask because I am confused why some es stones have the ideal word in their web link, while others don't?
