At the show both Sarin and OGI demonstrated how new GIA grading system will work with their machines. Unlike AGS grading system, which takes 3D scan into account, GIA will use overage proportions.

Sarin and OGI scans produce similar template that shows average parameters and matching GIA grade (e.g. Good, Very Good, or Excellent). There is also option to calculate how diamond should be re-cut in order to obtain higher GIA cut grade.

Cutters also will be able to plan the cutting of rough stones in order to obtain different GIA cut grades. Entire process takes just a few seconds for scanning and modeling.

Right now the programs are in beta versions but should be shipped in August in order for cutters to prepare for the new cut gradings.

GIA will charge from $1,000 to $2,000 per system and an annual renewal fee (20-30%) where upon a new CD will be installed each year allowing for ''adjustments'' to the grades.

At least that way they will be able to correct and improve continually - I am sure they will be looking at the reviews that all the Pricescopers post of the new "Excellent" diamonds.

It will be interesting to see how easily GIA can introduce fancy shape grades with the approach they have take?

Here is some info announced at the session on Thursday at the JCK show.

GIA said that once their system is on line, individuals will be able to enter Sarin or OGI parameters and obtain for free the GIA cut grade.

They are Beta testing the software that will go online and be free for the trade. It will be available in the near future (in the next few months). The trade will be able to use it to check their inventories and get familiar with the grading system before it goes on grading reports.

The system should be announced sometime soon, and that is when the software will be released. Grading reports will start sometime after Christmas. They said that Sarin and OGI are also in beta testing right now, and that those who use those devices will be able to purchase an upgrade software package from Sarin and OGI.
