Glancing at my Mom’s old recipe book....Is this real???

This thread reminds me of the Tuna fish casserole and Hamburger helper meals that were heavily advertised back in the day when we had free TV and numerous commercials.

Thick white bread (Texas toast style is good but I've also done it with leftover burger buns and Wonder bread!), toasted til golden brown and slathered in your choice of butter or peanut butter, then drowned in condensed milk. Eagle brand's Dulce de Leche condensed milk is also good.

Like @dk168 I also have a huge weakness for spam. Spam musubi, spam fried rice, Korean budae jjigae (Army stew) and fried spam in general (it's great on top of instant ramen with a fried egg and a drizzle of sesame oil and sweet soy/teriyaki glaze).

I do have a weakness for condenced milk ....

Thanks to this thread i have gome through and (almost) put away/ sorted 4 moving boxes (one appairs to have been the kitchen junk drawer)
I found the beaters for the small hand held electric beater, (i Already had the motor part) the glass lemon squezer, the glass cheese board, a nice candle and holder, some photos of Gary's kids when they were little, 2 new towels, 2 missing flannel pillow cases, the salad queen !!!!!!! ( Gary is very happy about that) a po-porie bowl, some magazines from Wills & Kates royal wedding
- the lemon squeezer was in a box called hall cupboard - the lemon squeezer oddly enough lived in the kitchen.
Oh two pots - the smaller saucepans plus the pressure cooker !

Now i also found Gary's 1982 copy of the Edmonds cook book
I think he was seperated from his wife by then ?
It has a microwave section and a whole section on deserts made will jelly and gelatine - im a bit excitted - there is a recepie for chocolate souffle in this section - no pictures but i used to make that ! 20210207_142349.jpg20210207_142430.jpg20210207_142407.jpg

Lucky this edition doesn't have the food for convilense (sorry about spelling) that mum's 1960's one did

but i just found a recepie for tinned beetroot set in raspberry jelly :mrgreen2:

Mmmm
Prune whip.
Brings back memories. :)

So after finding Gary's 1982 edition of the Edmonds cook book and the electric hand beater i just had to make pinnaple snow
i only had a lime jelly and crushed pinnapple not pieces but it is delicouse!!
Didnt quite beat it long enough after adding the beaten egg white to the jelly
Gary though id burn out the little motor if i ran it for 10 min

Anyway this has a lot of potential and next time im going to add mint and rum !,
I served it with some coconut cream which isn't Gary favourite
Ill try to remember to take a picture when its set better ....we couldn't wait !
Gary didn't really like it but i definatly did

I know American's will be too scared to eat uncooked egg white but this is really refreshing on a warm night

My mother used to make me cinnamon toast when I was a kid in the 60's. She'd mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle it (liberally!) on white bread toast with butter. The sugar would melt into the warm butter. Sugar was definitely not a concern during the 60's lol.

Yep, that’s how I still make it today, yum

My kids loved cinnamon toast! Also, taco shells fried in oil till crisp, drained, then sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Favorite jello...lime jello, put in fridge till almost set. Then add softened cream cheese and whipping cream. Use a hand mixer till well whipped. Then add, by hand, a can of crushed pineapple. Back in fridge till set. Great summer jello.

Cottage cheese, sweet n low, cut up fresh cantaloupe.

Yep, that was the other Christmas jello!

Same here! My paternal grandma was a country girl with no education, and she didn't know about cavities, or fat content, so when I asked to have condensed milk as a toddler (2-3 years old), she would just open a jar from the pantry and give me a spoon!

Just saw a Town and Country pop up ad selling new - Betty Crocker cookbooks from the 1950’s. Yep the red and white hard cover book in the three ring binder. $32 Plus S&S. Wonder if they updated the recipes as many used margarine, lard (which I love for pie crusts) and plenty of canned and bottled goods which many frown upon now. I have my mother’s.

My kind of grandma !
My grandma might not have done that for her own kids but she might have for us grandkids ! She howered us in cakes and lollies (sweets), biscuits (cookies) and chocolate
