Glancing at my Mom’s old recipe book....Is this real???

I’m an adventurous eater and I’m willing to try everything. These old school recipes are actually kinda cool....I have tried a couple recipes similar to the recipes posted here, in fact one of these is our thanksgiving staple:

And this is something I have made as a holiday appetizer....chipped beef on toast.

Our family does fresh raspberries, crushed pineapple in strawberry jello. A thanksgiving favorite.

I've had the bottom before, except it was called colloquially sh*t on a shingle. My friend's dad would make it for us sometimes when we were little and we were allowed to say it out loud during that time. It was just scandalous to a seven year old me. He also had a corvette that we'd tool around in. Sooo 80's!

The fruit jelly (jello) recepies with fruit dont look so bad
I always have a packet of jelly in the pantry because my cheesecake uses flavoured jelly not gelatin
I want to try the pinnaple rings in the lime jelly just for a laugh
But some of these salads just look awful

If we are talking disgusting food combos I have one to share. That I enjoyed immensely as a child. Spaghetti and cottage cheese and (wait for it) sweet and low sprinkled on top. Not kidding. I remember loving this dish as a child. So good. Now you couldn't pay me to eat it. Well, if the dollar amount was high enough maybe.

Who's idea was this? Was there sauce on the spaghetti, or just the pasta tossed with cottage cheese? The Sweet and Lo addition is just weird. Is this like poor man's kugel?

I will have to ask my mom. I remember we (I) were picky pre adolescents. I didn’t eat many things. I think (and I’ll have to check) this was my mom’s way to get calcium into me. I refused to drink milk. I hated it. But this I ate. It was (to my Neanderthal palette at the time lol) delicious. The plain cottage cheese (which now makes me gag just thinking about cottage cheese yuck) and the green ( no sauce/plain) spaghetti was yummy. And with sweet & low sprinkled gently on top well it was easy going down. Then. The thought of it now.

What can I say? I was a product of the times. The crazy, turbulent seventies. I loved growing up during that decade but well, life was different.

LOL, as a child of the '70s these look very familiar in a gag worthy type way. My grandmother was the queen of working jello molds with things that should never have been suspended in jello into the jello. I can't even look at jello as an adult.

My friends parents were very into jello as well so eating a meal at their homes often meant jello molds. With that trend leaking into the 1980s too. Yuck.

I think we were food twins. I hated milk too and it totally stressed out my parents. So much cottage cheese in the 70's!! Yuck.

One of my grandmothers was always making dairy based kugel though. I found that mildly edible so that was a way to get dairy.

I liked growing up in the 70's and early 80's too. I think we had a it a lot easier than my kids. I Think social media has made things more complicated and actually made socializing more difficult.

Oh, and the thought of sweet and low now, just ick. My mother put it on everything!

My mum never made fussy things so i never got these at my '70's kids parties - they were always in the colour photo section of the Edmonds cook book
But they look like they have survived well into the 21st century

Same! It reminds me of eating it straight out of the can when I was a kid. Now a days it's sliced spam coated in egg then fried, eat with rice. You'll always fine a few cans in my pantry

I too always have at least one can in the house, and carry a can as part of my camping provisions.

I kinda feel like I missed out, I've never had any of these crazy jello concoctions. They don't look super appetizing, but still. I wouldn't want the aggravation of making one but I'd love to see one and try it.
My oldest likes this gross canned meat spread stuff on toast that his dad apparently ate as a kid. I like their catch phrase though, The Devil You Know. They also eat different varieties of Bar Harbor tinned fish. I can't do that spread stuff.

Edit: My husband has been known to eat something called Potted Meat. It’s like spreadable bologna. I call it cat food

For those of you faint of heart over canned meat.....Behold my meat spread in toothpaste form! I received this squeezable meat spread from SIL who lives in Switzerland. She knows I eat everything weird and disgusting to others. This Pate in a tube can be easily squeezed into crackers or in a sandwich. Yum!

I have no idea what sweet and low is but it must be some miricle kid food !

Back in the 80s we used to have meat paste on our toast as a weekend treat
In the last year or two i bought some and ewwww

Oh no, DK, now you've done it! In addition to the "ham salad," my mom was also big on fried Spam sandwiches - on whole wheat bread with mustard. I haven't had one in decades, but it sounds very comforting right now.

I've had vienna sausages spam, pigs feet chitterlings. Chicken feet are still sold as regular food here. at the super ethnic stores here....lol you can find some very interesting stuff!

When I visit other countries I DO like to sample the local fare. Let me tell you, I've had worse than a vienna sausage...lol

I think some of those more savory jelly dishes used vinegar in place of some of the water to set the jelly
I can see this working but i absolutly detest vinegar in even the smallest quantities in anything
I can even taste the vinegar in a pvalova

I'm filipino and these are some of the same ingredients we put in our filipino style spaghetti. We use vienna sausage or hotdogs in our spaghetti, but we don't used canned spaghetti.

Vienna sausages are on my list of never foods along with:

cheese wiz
Spam (just can’t do it)
Sardines
Coffee in a can (just nope)

OMG! I love everything on this list! And strangely enough these are like filipino staple food items! lol! I grew up eating this in my house.

Vienna sausages are nice when your hiking or biking just stick one in your pocket and its a protein packed lunch on the trail.
I used to snag a can and a bag of raisins for lunch on the go all the time growing up.
