Glancing at my Mom’s old recipe book....Is this real???

Ewwww!
Gross! :knockout:

But hey, people vary, so someone would eat it.

yummy I have made simular to that before.
I made the getti not canned.

Vienna sausages are on my list of never foods along with:

cheese wiz
Spam (just can’t do it)
Sardines
Coffee in a can (just nope)

My mom used to make something called ham salad. It consisted of ground bologna, mayonnaise, pickle relish, and celery. When I was a kid, I thought it was pretty tasty.

Sardines are actually delicious!
I always thought they'd be nasty but buy some butter crackers and pour a little hot sauce on each bite....mmmm

Same with canned smoked oysters...sounds fkn disgusting but are actually quite delicious. I eat them the same way but I squeeze fresh lemon into the can and pour hot sauce in there and use a fancy silver stabber to take each one out and place them on the cracker haha

I always find it so interesting how truly hard they tried to make gelatin/newly processed food advance in the fifties and sixties. Novelty! Modern! Manufactured! The Future!

Love tinned sardines! I buy boneless, then mash them on top of freshly made toast with butter. Yummy & so good for you!

I know sardines are really good for you, it must be a mind thing, I just can’t do food (apart from vegetables) in a can.

My daughter whenever I eat them will say "Mom why do you have to eat gross things??"

I just laugh only because I would say the same thing when I was a little girl watching my own mother eat them. You'll have to take one out of the can, place it on a nice plate and try a bite with crackers one day!

I actually liked sardines as a kid? Now- no way. I can barely eat canned tuna.
I'm much pickier now then as a kid with food.
@Luvallgems old cookbooks are fascinating to me to see what was popular then. I took my mom's betty crocker from the 1960s.

This thread is making me laugh and I'm pretty happy about that..

I love sardines!
And we have a family history. In the old country, my mother's father was a sardine fisherman. He made his own nets. As a child I swung on hammocks knotted by him.

I think you are the only one alive that ever progressed as such!
Bahahahaha

I’m with you @YadaYadaYada, anything I fed my dog was a no no for me. She loved sardines, especially in tomato sauce.

& Woah I've never heard of giving them to pets! I always worry about the teensy bones but I'm a worry wart!

This is from the 1961 Cutco cookbook. You got the book when you bought a set of their knives.
When I was a kid, mom had this cookbook and I remember looking at these photos! Then I found this same cookbook at a rummage sale!
It was a real blast from the past.

And some recipes

I love Spam, thinly sliced then pan-fried until crispy, served with chilli mayo - it is one of my favourite comfort food!

DK :lol-2:

I like sardines, too.
The yummy ones in mustard between toasted wheat bread with some lettuce! And a kosher dill pickle spear on the side.
Sounds weird, but it is delicious!
And @TheGarnetGirl , I love smoked oysters, too!

My favourite was pinnaple snow
We have this cook book in NZ the Edmonds cookbook
(They make baking powder) its NZ's best selling book and its now over 130 years old - its updated on a regular basis and some recepies just disapair
But i made this a few times in the 90s from a '60's cook book
(We are not as afraid of raw eggs here as Americans are)
It was pinnaple jelly crystals with a can of crushed pinnaple and whipped egg whites
The only modern recepies i can find don't have the egg white but i reacon i can wing it
