Girdle Inscription Not Noted on GIA Report

I am interested in a diamond that has a 3 digit number inscribed on the girdle. The vendor states it is for their inventory. The inscription is not listed on the GIA cert. Is this a problem?

It's possible it was inscribed after GIA graded the diamond.
But it does sound unusual.
I'd make sure the diamond matches the report.

The vendor is well respected here and I'm confident the inscription was added after the stone was certed. But is the GIA report now invalid since the inscription is not on the report?

Unfortunately, yes. If a diamond is altered subsequent to the GIA report, it must be re-submitted so the report reflects the current condition of the diamond

If you were doing an inscription on an already certified diamond, why would you not inscribe the GIA # onto it?

Thanks for your comments. I asked the vendor about removing the inscription, and he said it could be easily done with a grinding wheel. When I expressed concern that the diamond weight might change or the bruted girdle (it's an antique) might be altered, he assured me this wasn't the case. Thoughts?

This would also invalidate an existing GIA report.
The best way to do this is have GIA do it- the service includes and updated report.
Or- if a diamond is inscribed prior to a report, the report will reflect it.
This is mostly done with branded diamonds. If there's a logo or brand on the diamond, GIA will include it in the report.

Any thoughts on having the inscription removed?

HI plummiecat
Two issues for me
1) any comment on a diamond which has not been inspected by the person making the comment will be uninformed - basically irrelevant.
2) as a trade member I can't comment on any other seller's wares.
I don't know who the seller is- even still, I can only make general comments.

Why would you even want it removed? I can't see inscriptions on my stones with a 10x loupe, so a 3 digit number on the girdle would be irrelevant to me. If this vendor routinely does this, then there are likely many others here who have the same thing.

Just because the lab report is invalid doesn't really change the grading. It's still most likely going to be those stats (or very similar as reports can change ever so slightly when resubmitted for regrading). You could always have it sent to GIA and have the report updated.

ETA: And I agree with DS, It will be very difficult to see. I wouldn't have it removed.

The reason that most people like girdle inscriptions is that it makes it easier to recognize your diamond again at some later date. That's the reason the dealer put it there as well but it serves you equally. Personally I wouldn't have a problem with it unless you've got concerns that it's not the same diamond as the report or that it's been modified in some way that affects the grading. Both of those would be deal killers anyway but for different reasons.

That said, if you've got a problem with it, pick a different diamond. Don't get into having someone polish it off. There's plenty more where that one came from .

Thanks for all of the helpful comments! I considered having the inscription removed so the stone would match the cert. I can read it with a 10x loupe, btw. The vendor has to decided to send the stone to GIA and have a new cert printed with a notation about the inscription.
