The girdle on my diamond is thin to medium. Since I am hard on my jewelry, I got a Tacori ring with 8 prongs and a halo around it. I am thinking about changing my engagement ring to a 4 prong Michael b. Should I leave it how it is, or would I be ok to make the change?
Thanks for your help!

Totally fine, not to worry about the girdle. I believe you only need to worry if it''s very thin.

Thanks Honey22! Anyone else have an opinion? I''d really appreciate it before I make a leap to another expensive setting. Thank you!!!!!!

my personal opinion is that people who are hard on their rings should not get 4 prong settings.
make sure it is insured if you do.

Thanks strmrdr! I do have a floater on my homeowners insurance for my existing ring- is that good enough? Do you feel I would be ok with a 6 prong, or would a 4 prong with a halo be good. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I am learning alot here and thankful for all of your opinions.
I''m new hear so thanks for bearing with me.

either 6 or 4 with a halo would be good.
keep in mind that is a personal opinion and not a professional one.
6 prongs are much more secure and protect the stone a little better, a halo also provides protection and the 4 prongs on a halo design are much shorter therefore stronger.

I had a stone with a thin girdle mounted in a 4-prong setting, and I chipped it within 6-7 months. (I''m hard on jewelry too.) My replacement stone has a medium - slightly thick girdle, and I had it set in another 4-prong setting. I''m hoping I have better luck this time, but I''m going with a 6-prong setting next time if I chip this one.

deegee, that was my next question. If I got a diamond with a girdle that was med. to slightly thick, is a 4 prong still a bad idea? Sorry to hear about your last diamond chipping. Hopefully your new one will work out just fine for you- good luck!!!!!!!!

Definitely insure it.
I prefer Slightly thick or thicker with exposed settings, and almost always make 6 prongs the other way around so the side is protected (where 90% of damage occurs)

Garry H.- thanks so much for the advice!!!! It looks like I need to stay put where I am at. I don''t trust myself with a 4 prong and that''s all I see from Michael b. for matching the band I am getting.

I don''t mind being hijacked at all- I love this place and am learning so much- thanks to all!!!!!!!!!!!

thin to med according to the helium numbers.
For someone that isn''t hard on their rings it should be OK in a 4 prong.

In general, it will probably be fine. You should definitely get your ring checked yearly for prong damage and loose prongs. In addition, you should always insure your nice rings *just in case* something happens. However, petite pave rings and rings with tiny prongs really aren''t meant to be worn doing *everything*. You should leave your ring at home when you garden, lift weights, work with chemical products, go swimming, etc.
