Dear All:

Is it true that GIA had some issues just recently where they were vetting their stone color and clarity incorrectly?

Now A LOT of jewlers in US are turning to EGL and now it is the new "GIA"?

I am based out of Los Angeles, if my certificate is EGL am I okay?

Thanks!

I definitely would not say EGL is the new GIA. GIA is definitely more trusted than EGL when it comes to grading. EGL is known for being easier on diamonds, so for example, a GIA graded I/SI2 may be graded by EGL as an H/SI1.

AGSL is also very reputable and they grade for light performance as well, and I believe other labs don''t.

Two or three years ago there were a few graders selling high grades to very large very expensive stones. They were caught and new measures were put in place to avoid anything like this ever happening again.

EGL is not now, nor do I think will it be ever, the new GIA.

If you want someone better than GIA for cut grading, turn to AGS. If you want to save money, turn to EGL, but beware that they are not as strict normally (at least historically) as GIA or AGS. although EGL USA is closer now than they used to be. EGL Isreal and Europe are both a joke.
