GIA triple excellent HCA 4.8!!!!!!!! how is this possible!!!

Hey guys,
here are the specs of my engagement diamond. Didn''t discover PS until after we purchased and I am so sad! Thought we bought a good stone but apparently not with an HCA of 4.8!!!! we paid 34K for this diamond can anyone tell me if we overpaid or got a fair price or got ripped off? And how is GIA so off in scoring cuts? Thanks!!

Please don't be sad, the HCA can penalize a diamond with a steeper pavilion angle, your diamond sounds lovely and of very high quality! Please don't let the score affect your joy with your diamond, numbers don't always tell the whole story! If you bought by your eyes what YOU both thought was a beautiful diamond, then that is all that matters. Are you thinking of returning it, and what were your thoughts about this diamond before you ran the HCA on it?

Did you buy it from an online vendor or from a brick and mortar jeweller? That can have an influence on the price also, but I just ran a quick search and your price seems ok for that size and quality.

Hi Tracy,

I'm sure others will chime in with more information than I. Basically, the pavillion angle of 41.4 degrees is what gives you the poor HCA value. This pavillion will result in some light leakage within a ring around the center of the stone (when viewing from the top).
In terms of getting ripped off, i just found a 2.03 carat AGS-0 Ideal G-VVS1 from jamesallen.com for $32,670.

So I would so you overpaid; however, the stone may still be lovely for you.

Can you return the stone if you don't like it?

We bought this diamond from a B&M jeweler about 4 months ago and its currently being reset in a tacori Halo so we can''t really return it Can''t wait actually for it to come in so I can post pics!! Wish we would''ve done a little more research when purchasing-we just figured that with triple GIA excellents we were getting the best cut stone possible!! the jeweler someone convinced us that he was giving us a GREAT deal at 34K and he in fact let us walk out the door and wouldn''t come down in price so we figured we were getting a good deal. We paid him in all CASH too, which frustrates me even more now bc he should''ve discounted even more bc of that! OH well, I still love the diamond, but am just a little disappointed at least now we know not to go back to that jeweler for future purchases Thanks u guys for your input so far I love PS!

You''ve seen the diamond with your eyes and you love it, which is much more important to any piece of paper or even the HCA. Please post pictures when you get it back!!

Please don''t be disappointed! The numbers and HCA scores don''t always tell the whole story, you bought a diamond you thought was beautiful and that is really what matters. It is so easy to second guess yourself, but please enjoy your lovely diamond and post pics when you get it back!

You know whats so funny is that I love my diamond but in the back of my mind I always thought that there could be just a tad more "sparkle". I''m a dentist and am a totally crazy detail oriented perfectionist so I just tought I was crazy and I was being too critical, but now I know maybe I''m not as crazy as I thought. when we were price shopping too we were comparing prices to blue nile prices. just figured that bluenile would be a good comparison for price, but based on what I''ve read on posts here Bluenile is overpriced?

It sounds like you love your diamond, and in a Tacori setting... well all I can say is

As for the pice, sure maybe you paid a couple thousand more than you may have paid for a similar stone online... but let''s put that in perspective shall we? That is about 5% of the price of the stone... considering that many B & M stores can cost 25% to 100% more than online retailers, you actually did very very well!

There is no use cryiing over spilt milk... you have a lovely large stone that is in a fabulous designer setting. I am very jealous, and you should be very happy

I don''t know if I would exactly call Blue Nile overpriced. I just purchased my diamond from there. Not only were they the only online vendor to have exactly what I was looking for, I had another highly highly reputable online dealer (one that many people on here use) tell me, after looking at the certificate, that they simply couldn''t come close to matching the price even if they did have a comparable stone. Maybe others have had a different experience, but I''m pretty happy.

I do understand what you are saying. But your diamond is unique and I am sure beautiful, and it is probably far better cut than many diamonds out there. I bet once you get it back in your glamorous Tacori setting, you will fall in love with your diamond all over again!!

Tracy, please post pics of your diamond when you get it back from the Tacori reset, we would love to see it please! You say you bought it 4 months ago, was it in a temporary setting with the plan to eventually reset it?

We originally had it set in a white gold setting, but I noticed that even in just a few months the ring was already getting yellower and didn''t really care to have to rhodium plate the ring over and over so we decided to get a new platinum setting.

our diamond also scored poorly on the hca but we still picked it b/c of its sparkle. let your eyes be the judge, it sounds like a lovely stone

I''d first echo others and tell you not to get discouraged; the diamond is a GIA Triple Ex, so it''s still far above the cut quality you''d have gotten from a typical chain store. You love it, so the paper shouldn''t change that.

The reason the HCA dings it is largely due to the crown/pavilion angles relationship and the overall depth. It''s a bit on the deep side, and that extra depth shows up in the steeper pavilion angle. If that pavilion angle was in the 40.7-41 range (which would then also mean less total depth) and paired with the 34.5 crown angle, the stone would score under 2 and would also likely fall into AGS0 cut parameters.

GIA''s top grade is much broader in scope than AGS''s top grade....but both typically far surpass the average quality you''d see locally.

Wear and enjoy your lovely stone, and do post pictures.
