Finally got to take the tour at the GIA Carlsbad, California campus. Very interesting. They have the largest cut gemstone there-- with lovely inclusions that look like tree needles. Funny but the tourguide''s spin seemed to be that inclusions, in general, are good because they show the gem is real. Lovely displays of colored stones. Even had a Cathham emerald on display, to my surprise. Disappointed we didn''t get a peek at the diamond grading labs. BTW, they have a full campus and for only a $895 class series you too can become a diamond grader. The guide claimed their graduates are much in demand. I thought of changing careers. . . .
I asked why the GIA doesn''t include crown and pavillion angles on their report--the official word seems to be that it is reported if it''s far out of the expected range for the diamond. Also told me that the GIA does consider diamonds of MANY cut parameters very fine and does not want to limit the way people think of an "ideal" cut.
All in all a beautiful campus and very enjoyable tour. Be sure to call in advance to make a reservation.
