I''m looking at whiteflash and james allen for a round e-ring diamond. However, after reading his testimonials and prices, I''m adding Mark at Engagement Rings Direct to the list. I love the fact that he might be able to go across the street and analyze virtual stones I''m considering (plus people here tend to trust his eye!).

Anyways, most of his premium inventory are GIA stones. After reading this board for a while, I''ve mostly been focused on how to find a good AGS stone. So what do I need to do to make sure I find a great GIA? I''ve heard that a Sarin is a must for GIA stones. But what do I do with the Sarin once I have it?

Also, when I input a GIA stone into the HCA, should I only stick with stones that fit into the AGS0 candidate area? I do understand that it would just be a candidate for AGS0, and perhaps nothing more.

as usual, thanks for the help!

HCA under 2 or 2.5

For the GIA cert. I would look for a newer version (2006). It should list the cut grade. You can take an older cert. and sometimes look up the cert. number on the GIA website. This may give you additional info.

GIA will rate Ideal (AGS) stones as excellent, but not all Excellent (GIA) cuts are Ideal (AGS). It is my understanding that the GIA top cut grade has a wider margin than say AGS. However, this does not mean that it is a bad stone. The numbers don''t mean anything if the stone looks like junk. If the stone is rated Excellent cut (GIA) then it may be worth a look.
