GIA Recertification

I have a stone that was GIA certified in 1983. How would you all recommend getting it recertified? I plan on using this stone to put it in an E-Ring in the next 4-5 months.

I think I have narrowed down where I will be getting the setting. Do you think it will be a good idea for me to ask the B&M store of which I am getting the setting from to send off the stone to GIA and get it recertified? Of course I would pick up the cost.

So how would you recommend me getting it recertified? If indeed I get it recertified? Can I go thru AGS??

Why do you want to get it recertified? Do you plan to sell it in the future? Maybe go with an independent appraiser if you just want to confirm the specs, get some cut info, etc.

You can also send it yourself. GIA approximate grading times are shown here: http://www.gia.edu/gemtradelab/35565/turnaround_time.cfm. Figure up to a week for transport in each direction in addition.

Before spending the money I'd want a specific reason to get the report. For instance to make an "old" stone "new" again

, to account for any possible wear and tear that has occurred since 1983, or to sell the stone i.e. since a buyer may want a recent report, or if you believe that the stone stands a chance of picking up a color and/or clarity grade.

I would like to make a "Old" stone "New" again for my piece of mind.......& to see if anything has happened to is since I got it.....I bought it off someone else

I would ask the jeweler to send it off for you. Doing business with GIA can be a frustrating experience. Yes, it takes 6 weeks. More if you’re from somewhere that will take a week each direction for secure shipping. They’re faster on bigger stones but they are famously difficult to predict. AGS is faster but a little bit more money. They REQUIRE you to submit it through a jeweler or appraiser.
