Hello all!

Thank you for your help. I'm currently looking at buying a diamond. I found one that I like and would like to buy.

The problem is that the certification is about four years old and it is not laser inscribed.

My question is: if I ask them to send it to Gia to inscribe it will Gia have to recertify the original report and then inscribe it providing a new report?

Or are these two separate services?

Thank you all and I apologize if this is an obvious question.

Why do you want the inscription? I guess I never felt the need to and prefer not to have an inscription in the diamond. I am strange but it almost feels like I am polluting the diamond :P

i would get gia to laser inscribe the diamond when the stone gets send over for a re-grading.

1) It helps to identify the diamond (together with the location of the inclusions).
2) you most likely won't see the inscription apart for the times when using a loupe.

 I agree, it drives me nuts when I'm watching videos on JA's site and can see the inscription reflecting through the stone. I've had to stop and take screen shots to be sure that was what I was seeing!

OP you won't see the above IRL so it's no reason not to get one, but I agree with Charmy that I've never felt the need to have an inscription either. Only one of my stones has had one and it came that way with a plot diagram, it wasn't something that I requested. If you want it for added security, I can tell you that diamond swapping is a very low risk and you would be covered by your insurance (provided you plan to insure) in the event that it ever happened. If you decide to have it inscribed, instead of the report number you can have a special message, I think that is what I would do....much cooler than a series of numbers! ;))

Hello all,

Thank you so much for all your help.

So it does seem like these are two separate services.

For those of you asking why I want to do this? Added security is my main reason.

I think what is more important now is that I have the diamond re-certified as a four year old report concerns me.

Thank you all for your help!

GIA offers several different services. The 'Diamond dossier' includes a document and a girdle inscription as a bundled service. This is only available for stones below 2 carats. A 'Diamond Grading Report' has a more complete document than the DD but no inscription. These are available on all untreated natural diamonds. You can get an inscription done along with a DGR but it's not required and there's a nominal additional fee.
