Hello,

I'm no diamond professional, just an engineer by trade. I came accross a stone I'd like to sell but it had no cert. It looks nice, white, clear and shinny. I did some research and decided to send it off to GIA. The pre-cert came back as Cut: Very Good, Color: K, Clarity: I1. I was a little suprised, considering that it looks very white and I can't see any inclusions without a 10x loop, and I've looked at it for a while. Now, I understand that EGL has a rep. for being more lenient, and I know I can't guarentee a better grade with EGL, but I do know that even slightly higher color and clarity will make the stone more attractive.

I appologize if this is an amatuer question, but if EGL grades it slightly better, could I get more for it on the oper market?

Thanks!

Stone weight is 0.8 C

Smart buyers know that EGL grades are . . . uhem . . . cough cough . . . generous.

Perhaps you can get an EGL report and wait for an ignorant buyer.
Zillions of retailers do.

Now that you know this I'll leave you alone to wrestle with your conscience over this ethical dilemma.

Sadly, Kenny is right. Clearly you can send to EGL and if that does not come back high enough for you, send it to IGI.

Whether or not you are comfortable doing so is up to you and since you are asking here, I am assuming that you know most of the vendors here would NOT do that, even more sadly, Kenny is right, Zillions of retailers do. Dad blast their rotten little hides!

Even sadder than that is that many of them, especially the sales associates, do not know because they have never been properly educated about the products that they sell.

Sigh.

EGL stones of the same grade as GIA stones will sell for less because they are worth less. I'd never buy an EGL stone (unless it was special stone like an antique) as GIA is known to be far more reliable.

A GIA K .80 diamond is worth more than an EGL J. You did your research and came to the right conclusion, trust in that. GIA has the reputation it does for a reason. If you post your observations (eyeclean) and a lot of good pics and list the diamond as "GIA certified" on ebay you will get many more looks than you would expect-- lots of excellent pics and a GIA lab report as well as using the right title to engage search terms will get you more than wasting your time with another lab report. As you are not a retail seller you can't ask full retail but with a GIA lab report you will be able to ask for more than you would with an EGL lab report.

I would not send it in to get re-graded And honestly, the I clarity would concern me as a buyer more than the color. You will want to list the grade setting inclusions noted on your lab report. Why did it get an I clarity if it is eyeclean.

What's your sales strategy AFTER you get a pedigree you like?

GIA doesn't really do 'pre grade' reports. You're on the hook to pay them anyway so you might as well just order the report and get the stone back. You've got a week or 2 to think about this but play some 'what if' kind of questions and see what you can think of. If you're going to be selling to a dealer, you might be better selling it without a report at all but I doubt an EGL with a higher grade is going to help. If you're going to sell to a consumer on ebay or whatever, look for completed auctions and see what similar private party sales are going for with the different options are going for. If you're REALLY confident that you're right and they're wrong, you can ask for a recheck at a discounted price for the second exam but there's no guarantee that they'll upgrade anything.
