latest (strong) rumors indicate gia are planning to open a laboratory here in antwerp soon.

if true, this would be great because gia wouldn''t be an exclusive american product anymore.

OUCH!!!!!! What about HRD & IGI Antwerp??

Are HRD and IGI for profit companies? What are the main seperations of GIA and these other agencies?

I thought they considered that once and dropped the idea because the NY diamond trade went apopletic over it?

lawgem, they did indeed. not only was the ny diamond trade against gia going to antwerp, the hrd made it impossible for the gia to open as well. but now that hrd is planning to open shop in america, some are saying hrd cannot stop gia to open. i suspect american traders won't be happy if gia opens in antwerp.

to nicrez:

gia = non profit org. however 'gem trade lab' has different status = profit.

hrd = non profit

igi = private owned

and how relevant is this anyway?

take it for granted: they all make profit and why wouldn't they.

Hey Robbe

Here is a thought,
We all know that large amounts of poorly cut diamonds hide behind the credibility of GIA certs. When GIA finally introduces cut proportions to their grading, where will the paper trading cutters that cut for weight go?
HRD sounds like a logical option with their very wide cut tolerances and good reputation for color and clarity.

good point but this is yet another problem / issue.

looks like gia is facing great difficulties to launch a comprehensive cut grade system:

it seems to me they are digging their own grave with regard to this issue.

as usual, gia needs to come up with a gia system.

fair enough, except this time they are walking on very thin ice if you ask me.

time will tell.

meanwhile, if gia opens labs in antwerp & hrd in usa, i suppose igi did the right move opening

all their places on the globe. smart strategy.

HRD is a non-profit organisation set up by the belgian government.
from what i have heard HRD is rated higher than GIA. competition can only be for the best?

wrong; hrd was set up by the antwerp diamond trade. not the government.

also hrd is not rated higher than gia.

most people regard gia as the highest authority in gemology.

however hrd & igi are more consistent than gia in their grading.
