Will it end up like the AGS certs with the badly cut stones getting Dossier''s rather than showing any cut grade below EX?
I wonder if they will follow AGS''s lead and allow them to see the cut grade then pick the cert.

It is a great way to get more thru put as their is no need to plot (for identification) if the girdle is laser inscribed (which can be done by a relatively untrained person in less time than an accurate plot).

I had a chat with Phil Yantzer today and he tells me the waiting time at GIA is now around 2 weeks (less than 1/2 what it has been) and their thru put is up 30%.

AGS have released the same option for ?0.19 to 0.99ct

GIA put their little cut away stone and data on their mini certs Storm

If all thats missing is the plot then I can live with it I guess.

Here are listed turnaround times, in business days, on the GIA site.

Dont always believe what you read....

In reality..., I am getting results (not the actuall report) within a four week average...
Just pointing out the link DG.

Diagem it seems to me that this means GIA have more than halved their grading times.

In case you did not open John''s link:

Turnaround Time

In the table below, you’ll find the current estimated turnaround times for diamonds and colored gemstones submitted to GIA’s New York and Carlsbad laboratories. Turnaround times are updated weekly.

GIA Laboratory Turnaround Times*
For the week of June 4, 2007

Services CA NY
Diamonds over 4 ct. 5-7 days 2-3 days
Diamond Dossier® 16-18 days N/A
Diamond Grading 13-15 days 15-17 days
Colored Diamonds 7-9 days 10-12 days
Colored Stones 2-4 days 2-4 days

*These figures represent the number of weekdays between the intake date and the date that results are ready plus one day for report generation and the return process. The numbers reflect recent activity and can be used as an estimate for future outcomes.

GIA is marshalling manpower and resources to improve the time it takes for gemstones to undergo the grading and identification process. We are firmly committed to improving our turnaround time without compromising the benchmark standards of quality and accuracy that are expected in GIA reports.

Of course we know that there can be annoying practices like disagreements and costly rechecks that add extra costs and time. But this is a new level of transperency from GIA and according to Phil, their volume has gone up 30% as a result of reductions in time and charges.

Garry, I did open the link...
But as of today..., I have stones that were submited the end of April..., and I still dont have answers!

DG - why don''t you register at GIA for their new online service (link) and let us know if has any useful information. They say:

Available from GIA’s secure web portal, My GIA, GIA Laboratory online service allows you to:

* check the current status of items submitted to GIA
* view results on completed items
* request additional services such as rechecks or inscriptions
* order reports to be printed
* view all items that are available for pick up or shipping
* view all items that have been returned to you within the last two weeks.

18 weekdays is just 2 days shy of 4 weeks. For those of us who don’t happen to live in NYC or Carlsbad, it involves another week of shipping each way to get it there and back again because of USPS. Funny how what looks like 2 weeks can turn out to mean 6, even if they’re on schedule.
