GIA Diamond Opinion

Hi everyone,

I was seeing what everyone's thoughts were on this diamond and if its an okay deal or not. The two problem that jumps out at me is the "cloud" characteristic and the GIA Certificate is from 2004, but it is a laser inscription. They are asking $5,100. The specs are:

Round brilliant
6.35-6.39 x 3.76 mm
.92 carat
Depth = 59%
Table = 59%
Girdle = Thin, Faceted
Cutlet = None
Polish = Very Good
Symmetry = Excellent
Clarity = VS2
Characteristics = Cloud
Color Grade = G

As-is, I think it's a terrible deal.
- The report is old enough that it includes no cut info - which means we have NO idea how the stone looks or performs
- The report represents the condition of the stone at the time it was issued. Unless the stone has been sitting in a safe somewhere for the last decade, it is very possible that it now shows some signs of wear and tear - especially given the thin girdle
- Despite all of that, it's priced like a well-cut 0.9ct G VS2 with a modern report

Yssie - Thanks for the reply. I saw it in person but I really do not know much about diamonds so it looked good to me. I may try to see if they will send it back it in for a recertification or wait until they get something else in. I don't play on proposing until the fall.

Julie - What would be the ideal diamond depth? I keep on reading how if it is too shallow it will lose some of its fire so I do not want that.

Below 60, depending on table size, the probability of it being too shallow starts increasing rapidly, and below 59.5 the probability of it being too shallow is rather high, IMO.
