Dear all,

First, please excuse my lack of knowledge in buying diamonds. I'm just wondering if a vendor, whose selling a new GIA certified diamond, is obligated to provide the client with the original copy of the certificate? If the vendor is unable to provide the certificate, does it mean there might be something fishy going on? Thank you!

No, it is common for the supplier to hold the original report till the diamond is sold. You will receive the original after you purchase the stone.

Hi Day dreamer, welcome to PS.
To clarify DF's answer a bit:
If you're purchasing a diamond with a GIA report, you should absolutely receive the original GIA report with the diamond.
GIA used to issue duplicate reports on request, without having the diamond- but now they will not do that unless the diamond is resubmitted.
This complicates matters a bit.
If a diamond is in a setting it would need to be removed- so its in your best interest to make sure the deal is contingent upon the original GIA report coming with the diamond.

I hope this helps

Thank you, Dancing Fire and Rockdiamond!

I've bought perhaps 30 diamonds.
Everyone was accompanied with its GIA or AGS report.

My understanding: That's because every diamond I have bought was owned by the vendor.
The lab report stays with whomever owns the diamond, even if they've shipped the diamond to another vendor 'on memo'. (pros, correct me if I'm wrong.)

There is a virtual database so participating vendors can offer zillions of diamonds for sale that they don't own.
You may not get the report WITH the diamond but you should always get it in a timely manner, and I'd get that promised on the sales receipt/invoice/email.

Thanks for the info, kenny
