GIA certificates-dated summer of 2011

Would you stay away from these stones? I saw a few on Blue nile and James Allen and was just wondering if the stones aren't that great. Or do the dates not matter? Do you think the prices of these "older stones" can be negotiated?

The date of certification doesn't matter, and will not affect a stone's value. There are many stones with much older reports that are still on the market or have returned to the market.

I wouldn't avoid them, no.

Several possibilities. First, there are some stones that are just not as actively "traded," if you will. Stones larger than 2 carats, for example, may linger while waiting for the right buyer. Stones with very strong blue fluor. Stones with twinning wisps, which may be eye-clean, but have scary clarity plots. The thing is whether these stones are already priced appropriately for their "challenges." I.e., it may be sitting around for a while because of the VSBF, but if it's priced comparably with others, than that's just the discount associated with knowing it will likely sit for a while. So if these "old" stones are priced appropriately for the market, there's not much room to negotiate, in all likelihood.

Additionally, stones can be traded in. There have been some ladies on here who have upgraded their engagement rings several times before the wedding, so even a year old isn't too old to be an upgrade stone. Or someone bought their FI a round, and it turns out she'd really prefer a princess, etc.

No, that is not an old date.

I would not be concerned about a cert from that time period bought from a reputable vendor.

I only start to wonder when a stone has a report from 3+ years ago. Or if its bought second hand and is a lab report more than a few years old then I would personally want an inspection to make sure the stone has not been damaged from wear.
