I''ve seen some certificates dated August 2005 and others dating back to, say, January 2005. Does that mean that the vendor has been trying to sell the diamond since January and nobody has bought, or am I reading to much into that? I don’t want to buy something that everybody else has passed on. I''m a novice and might be missing something that others are seeing.

Hi,
I would not read anything into that.
Diamonds do not sell the day sellers get them back from GIA- even iin cases of 5 year old reports, it does not neccesarily indicate a problem.

On the other hand I, as someone who does not sell diamonds, will mention that I have read several times here that exceptionally superb diamonds sell fast.

By superb I'm talking about stones that got very "lucky" clarity ratings or had inclusions that were not dark or not located under the table or near the girdle, or at a depth that makes them not show up reflected all over the place.

So, I'm sure sellers want to sell the oldies as much as new new ones but I personally would take the date into consideration.
While it is natural to wonder why some of the very old ones haven't sold, I will also add that if everything checks out, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one with an older date.

After all, the rocks are zillions of years old.
They don't go bad like yesterday's coffee.

1) I have NO stake in this sale- I don''t even know who''s offering the diamond- I point this out because you hinted that my position as a seller would influence my answer.
2) anecdotal forum evidence is not really useful for drawing valid conclusions.
So, saying "lucky" stones sell immediatly, is simply not true.
Especially in a case where we''re comparing two GIA reports drawn over the past 9 months.

A 9 months old lab report is by no means a problem. I actually would have no problem buying a 2004-dated diamond report. It doesn''t necessarily mean that it was a ''''bad'''' diamond that did not get sold, it may just be a matter of not being distributed by the wholesaler, or being kept in the inventory or a zillion other reasons.

I appreciate the feedback. I have one more question. The diamond I’m looking at most closely says, "Additional pinpoints are not shown" and "Surface graining is not shown" in the Comments section of the GIA certificate. The clarity is graded VVS2. Should I be concerned about those comments?

One other diamond says "An additional facet is not shown" in the Comments section. Is that a problem for a princess cut diamond?

Thanks again.

Absolutely nothing to worry about on Additional Pinponts, or Surface graining comments- especially on a VVS2.

Likely the same for the additonal facet on the princess cut- although a viaula on that one might be in order.
Was the symmetry at least "good" on the Princess?

David...That puts my mind at ease. The symmetry is Very Good on both diamond.

Thanks!
