When I purchased my diamond for my girl''s e-ring, I was shown/given a copy/print-out of the GIA cert. I did not receive or pay for the ring yet, but will be soon. Should I expect to get the actual GIA cert or a legitimate copy (not a print out)? Or say does GIA keep all the originals on file. I don''t question the ligitimacy of the diamond but this is more to make sure I do things right, and for insurance purposes, etc.

On a related note - how soon following purchase of an e-ring do I need to have it appraised, insured, etc. Anybody have any information on this? I studied up very much using this site to make a purchase but now I am not sure of the next steps.

GIA does not keep the original lab reports on file, they follow the diamond, so GIA would have sent the original lab report to whoever originally submitted the diamond for grading.

The vendor may have the original lab report on hand, in which case they should deliver it to you with the diamond... However if the diamond was sent to the vendor "on memo" (consignment) then the cutter may forward the original lab report to the vendor upon confirmation of the sale.

Your diamond should be accompanied by the ORIGINAL certificate from the GIA. They don''t keep originals, merely capture the data and store it electonically. If you ever need to sell the diamond ring for whatever reason, then you will find the GIA certificate to be invaluable.

You should obtain insurance as soon as you take possession of the diamond. I would believe that if you call your insurer ahead of time and tell them that you will be buying a ring, they will quote you the fee, and then tell you that as soon as you have a copy of the receipt, you can fax it to them and they will issue you a binder until a more formal appraisal is done. After you get the appraisal, you may fax that to the insurer as well.

Good advice and in my experience, this is an accurate assumption.

Thanks for all the great and prompt responses. I will be calling my insurer shortly!

This site has been a great resource, my only regret is not finding it in time to work with a PS vendor instead of a B&M store.
