Pardon my ignorance but how exactly do you "attach" your diamond to GIA's certification?

I plan on going there to have a diamond graded but once you get the grading on paper, how do they connect it with the diamond?

Certainly they don't mark it with a number ? or do they make accurate measurements of the diamond that make it coincide with the paper?

Are all diamonds different somehow?

THANK YOU.

They will "mark" the stone with the GIA number if you request (and pay for it). Mostly people (jewelers) tell from the
inclusion plot and looking at the stone with a loop or microscope. Inclusions should match up.

And yes, all diamonds are different.

INTERESTING.

Live and learn, huh?

So, what's the word on having them mark it ? Considered negative/positive/indifferent ?

Thanks so much.

I have not asked for mine to be marked. Some came with it, though. You insure based on the sales receipt or appraisal and provide the insurer a copy of the lab report, so I haven't really seen a need to have a number put on the girdle. If a thief steals your stone, they can polish it off anyway.

The "mark" is a laser inscription.
I like them- but the fact is that such inscriptions may not offer a high level of "security" tool per se.
This is because it's relatively easy to remove the inscription.
It might be useful to a consumer who gives a diamond to be worked on- to make sure they get the same diamond back.

Low tech answer would be just to weigh and measure the stone and compare it to the grading certificate. What are the chances that your stone and the certificate would be different?

Great point bcavitt!
IMO it's an extremely important step for a wholesale diamond buyer.
Since dealers/cutters are very careful, it's extremely rare to see the wrong diamond with a GIA report in the circles we buy in- but still, it makes all the sense in the world to take the proper steps- that being physical examination- to make sure on every stone.
Physical examination is also the way we check- as opposed to using the laser inscription- to verify.
