Getting the biggest stone possible

Hello everyone!

To make a long story short, I'm in a rush to propose to my lovely lady. Pretty much, as soon as I get the ring, I'm going to pop the question. I tried to do as much research as possible with my limited amount of time (I'm taking 24 credit hours in engineering, that's like having 2 jobs almost  ), but I'm pretty stuck on what to do. One of my friends recommended I ask you kind folk on this site for advice.

So, me and my girlfriend have been completely open as to what kind of ring she wants. There are two options:

1) Tacori Dantela 2620 RDLGP and a smaller stone

2) Plain setting, bigger stone

Ideally platinum, because we both agreed she is too clumsy for a delicate metal :P

If I go with option 1, where can I get the biggest stone possible. I'm only looking for something that is "eye clean". I've been looking at "whiteflash", so far that's the best one I can find.

If I just do the plain setting, where can I get the best bang for my buck? I liked "blue nile" so far, but I'm not sure on quality and stuff.

My budget is $10000 - $13000 Canadian.

Thanks a lot for everyone's time and advice!

Platinum is nice. Don't get me wrong. But gold isn't fragile. If it saves you 500 bucks, with considering. If she is hard on her hands, platinum or gold isn't a concern, either metal, shell want to take her ring off and put it away so she doesn't damage her stone as diamonds are not indestructible.

Have you looked at good old gold? They have a good selection too (not sure if you're looking round or cushion as the 2620 has a cushion outline with the bloom halo). They also have a preowned 2620 setting for sale (platinum) that would allow you to spend a bit more on the center stone so maybe a best of both worlds.

If she's hard on rings I wouldn't recommend a setting as intricate as the 2620. I had one and was constantly worrying about deforming it or knocking out any of the zillion tiny stones.

I'd get a nice sturdy platinum setting and a bigger stone, myself.

I personally would always opt for a larger stone, less intricate setting. She can always reset again later if she chooses. Tacori settings are expensive - would just rather have the money going for the stone.

For instance, this is a nice stone from WF since you were looking there. Top of the line cut, almost to the 1.50 mark without paying the price increase for that magic size: http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3326176.htm?source=pricescope

Choose a simple white gold or platinum solitaire setting. It would be stunning!

For those of us in the States, I've plugged Dan's budget range into a currency converter: $10,000 - 13,000 CAD is $7,855 - $10,212 USD; the MSRP showing for that particular Tacori semi-mount is $5,120 USD in platinum, $4,020 in 18K white gold.

So much as I like that new WF diamond MissGotRocks found, it unfortunately is priced about 20% higher than the budget cap for center stone + mounting.

And this.

I agree with other posters suggestion of putting more money towards the stone & not setting. I'm not familiar with the Tacori setting you refer to but take a look at James Allen. They have a sale right now & the prices are reasonable to start with. She may want to use her setting for a coloured stone down the road, take a look at a less expensive setting option. And while you're on James Allen, take a look at their stones. If you are near a border town, might be an idea for you to have them send it Stateside & you can pick up there. I'm in Toronto & thats pretty much what I do all the time. Our dollar is abysmal right now. :nono: If you choose the stateside route (NY State), dont buy from a vendor in NY or from Blue Nile.

All the best..

Hi there. I am just adding to the chorus recommending you to put the money into the largest and best stone possible and leaving the intricate expensive setting for a future date when you have more time and money. Personally though I prefer platinum and for a little extra money I would probably still choose a simple platinum setting.

Best of luck and congratulations on your upcoming engagement!

Oh, I did want to add that if you choose Whiteflash or Brian Gavin Diamonds for your stone, buy with confidence. They have nice stones but a higher priced. Their settings are lovely as well but with a stone & setting, try James Allen.

** I'm using NY as an example. If you buy a stone in NY, buy the setting at a vendor outside of NY State & have them set & ship to NY state. Then pick up in Buffalo. We have cheap gas right now. Is cheaper to fill a gas tank thank any other option. If you are in Toronto or gta, let me know.

My 2p.

If I were spending that much money for a diamond alone, I am not going to skimp on the setting and would go for platinum as plated WG will require re-plating occasionally.

I agree with the others about 1.5mm shank being too delicate, and would go for 2.5mm tapered to 2mm at the bottom myself.

I would prefer to semi/full bezel-set everything nowadays, after loosing the prong-set central imperial jade of my mum's double diamond halo ring over 20 years ago during one boozy work related event.

I would avoid delicate paves for daily wear if she is hard on her rings.

Good luck with your search.

DK :))

HI:

Our (Canadian) dollar exchange is so poor right now--is there no option to buy local with a Canadian vendor?

cheers--Sharon

This, +1.

And another voice in support of a larger stone, simpler setting. & plat is not that much of a bump, especially if most of her other jewelry choices are silver metals.

Go for the biggest sparkliest stone you can get. A setting upgrade can come later. The WF ACA's, (their branded cut) is stunning. Cannot go wrong there either.

Have fun, this is an exciting time of life, & congratulations. Kudos to you for coming here to dialogue with PS, before your purchase!! :appl:

Hey everyone!

First of all, thanks for all the help, i really appreciate it :)

I will be talking with my girlfriend about this stuff during the next few days. We're completely open about this ring situation, because I would prefer to get the perfect one for her.

So far, I tend to agree w/ the bigger rock. And the suggestion to upgrade the setting down the road is a great idea. I never considered the fact I can re purpose the original plain setting. I have a buddy who carves gemstones on his spare time, so voila, that's just a good gift idea down the road ;)

I generally think it's wise to plan to upgrade the setting later on. It's a small expense in the grand scheme of a lifetime to replace the setting, and you can keep the sentimentality of the center stone.

I recently bought two new rings in 14k white, and if I really love one of the settings, I will buy the platinum version and eat the $600-$700 the white gold settings cost me. If not, no love lost and I can invest in a better one down the line. I will only buy plat if I am sure it's for life.
